Napier Port Q3 trade data shows resilient containers amid weaker bulk volumes

Containerised imports slipped 8.5% in the quarter but grew 3.7% year‑to‑date, driven by strong fertiliser and paper product imports, while bulk imports were down in the quarter yet up over nine months, with fertiliser gains offsetting weaker oil products and cement.Operationally, container vessel calls climbed to 86 in the quarter, up from 70 a year earlier, highlighting the impact of new shipping services and reinforcing Napier Port’s role in connecting regional exporters to global markets. In contrast, charter vessel calls edged lower and bulk volumes softened, indicating that while containerised trade and fertiliser-related activity are supporting throughput, the port remains exposed to geopolitical challenges affecting log exports and broader bulk demand.
