# Unpacking the 'Tech and Hard Assets' Myth: What's Really Inside This HK Portfolio

I’ve seen a lot of thematic portfolios in my time, but throwing a massive state-owned bank, a global infrastructure giant, and a couple of highly questionable micro-caps into a bucket called "HK Tech and Hard Assets" is a new level of creative marketing. This is stupid and here's why.

When you strip away the "smart hardware" and "new energy" buzzwords from this group, you're left with a bizarre cross-section of the Hong Kong market. Let's look at what's actually happening behind the curtain.

First, the actual hard asset: **长江基建集团 (1038.HK)**. While the market is hallucinating over the next generative AI iteration, CKI is just quietly running global toll roads and power grids. HSBC recently named them a top pick, and they continue to methodically add veteran expertise to their board as of mid-2026. It’s boring, it’s reliable, and frankly, I’ll take boring over a fake tech story any day of the week.

Then we have **邮储银行 (1658.HK)**. Calling Postal Savings Bank a tech play is certainly a choice. The bank is moving massive weight, with corporate banking revenue jumping **16.92%** to **RMB 80.09 billion** and asset management crossing the **7.69 trillion** mark. But the real story that caught my eye? A former executive getting publicly named in July 2026 for taking bribes in the form of Feitian Moutai liquor. You can't make this stuff up.

Things get much murkier at the bottom of the barrel. **威讯控股 (1087.HK)** wants you to focus on their 2025 revenue growing **21.7%**. Sure, losses narrowed. But if you look at July 2026, massive chunks of equity—upwards of 7% at a time—were being shuffled between brokers like Kingston Securities and Futu. Add a recent equity placement to the mix, and it smells less like an operational turnaround and more like a financial shell game.

And finally, **GUANZE MEDICAL (2427.HK)**. They pitch themselves as a medical imaging cloud service. The reality? The SFC had to step in this May to point out that 20 shareholders control a whopping **94.13%** of the stock. Combine that with a radically discounted takeover offer earlier this year, and this is basically a private club masquerading as a public company. Good luck with that.

My view is simple: stop buying the "frontier tech" label without looking under the hood. Stick to the companies actually generating cash and ignore the manufactured hype.
