The European Commission imposed a fine of approximately $1 billion on Google for violating the Digital Markets Act due to its search business and app store misconduct, and required rectification within 60 days. The U.S. expressed strong dissatisfaction, accusing EU regulators of harming the rights of American companies and threatening to implement retaliatory tariffs, leading to further escalation of tensions between the U.S. and Europe in the fields of trade and digital regulation

The European Commission announced a total antitrust fine of approximately $1 billion against the American tech giant Google and demanded it rectify its search business and app store operating model. The U.S. side immediately expressed strong dissatisfaction with the EU's punitive actions and threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs on the EU, further escalating transatlantic economic and digital regulatory tensions.

The European Commission pointed out that Google manipulated search results to suppress competitors and restricted developers from offering better deals to users outside the Play app store, which seriously violated relevant antitrust regulations such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Based on this, the EU ruled to fine Google approximately $524 million for violations related to its search business and about $490 million for violations related to its app store, requiring it to complete rectifications within 60 days, treat third-party services fairly, and stop restricting transactions outside the app store. European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera and Henna Virkkunen emphasized that high-quality products should win based on competitive advantages, and the EU will not hesitate to use regulatory tools to maintain market competition and digital sovereignty.

In response to the EU's ruling, Google stated that the related rectification requirements would force the company to cut core functions such as real-time search and weaken security protections, harming the interests of European businesses and consumers. Google's Global Affairs President Kent Walker pointed out that this move would not promote fair competition but rather lead to a decline in product service quality.

The U.S. side reacted strongly to the EU's regulatory measures. White House spokesperson Kush Desai reiterated that the U.S. firmly opposes trade partners imposing digital service taxes or high fines on the American tech industry and emphasized that the U.S. would take corresponding countermeasures. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer issued a statement accusing the EU's continuous regulatory measures of increasing user privacy risks, constituting substantial coercion of technology transfer and intellectual property deprivation, and seriously harming the legitimate rights and interests of American companies
