# Inside the Hong Kong Stock Realignment: Buybacks and Expansion Plans

Hong Kong's traditional sectors and uncategorized equities are experiencing a dense wave of capital maneuvers. I'm told that controlling shareholders of several heavyweights have recently rolled out share buyback and accumulation plans to stabilize market confidence against the backdrop of broader macro uncertainties. According to people familiar with the matter, this is shaping up to be one of the most significant valuation defense actions for the sector this year, particularly as these companies pivot from rapid expansion to prioritizing shareholder returns.

### Chow Tai Fook (1929.HK)

Chow Tai Fook (1929.HK) has outperformed the broader market recently. I'm told the company recorded its highest-ever profit for **FY2026**, a direct result of its brand transformation. For the first quarter ended **June 30, 2026**, retail sales value grew **15.1%** year-over-year, with Hong Kong, Macau, and other markets surging **44.8%**. According to people familiar with the matter, its mainland online channels showed robust performance with a **29%** jump, and the momentum is expected to tilt toward higher-margin products later this year.

Riding the high gold prices, Zhaojin Mining (1818.HK) has logged cumulative gains this year. The company reported a revenue of **RMB 4.46 billion** in the first quarter of **2026**, up **46.67%**. On **July 22, 2026**, it completed the issuance of **RMB 2 billion** in tech innovation corporate bonds. I'm told this capital will be used to optimize debt structures and back the expansion of its domestic gold mining and smelting operations.

### China Coal Energy (1898.HK) & Tsingtao Brewery (168.HK)

I understand that state-owned enterprises and consumer giants in Hong Kong are aggressively rolling out market-support plans. In **July 2026**, the controlling shareholder of China Coal Energy (1898.HK) announced a plan to increase its A-share holdings by no less than **RMB 50 million**. Similarly, the parent group of Tsingtao Brewery (168.HK) declared it would buy between **RMB 150 million and 300 million** of A and H shares within six months. According to people close to these companies, management believes current valuations have severely decoupled from fundamentals.

### CALB (3931.HK)

The overseas expansion of CALB (3931.HK) is accelerating. Construction of its **EUR 2 billion** battery plant in Portugal officially kicked off in **February 2025**, with deliveries targeted to begin in **2027**. I'm told the company, which is the primary supplier for GAC's new energy vehicles, is pushing hard to capture a larger global market share through this European footprint.
