# The Physical Layer Value Chain: Lessons From Infrastructure and Energy Bottlenecks

The conventional wisdom of the tech industry revolves around Aggregation Theory—the idea that whoever controls the end-user relationship can systematically commoditize their suppliers. This software-centric logic, driven by zero marginal costs, has been undefeated for the past decade. But as we examine the current cycle dominated by AI buildouts and geopolitical decoupling, the opposite is occurring: physical world bottlenecks are redefining the value chain. The key to understanding this paradigm shift is identifying the players solving absolute limits in power, cooling, and materials. These ten seemingly disparate companies serve as a perfect case study for this underlying infrastructure layer.

Consider the rigid constraints of data center thermodynamics and energy supply. Take AAON Inc (**AAOZ.US**), for instance. Traditionally a standard commercial HVAC manufacturer, the company saw its stock underperform recently despite boasting a massive **USD 1.83B** backlog by the end of 2025. This reveals a strategic pivot: they are transitioning into a mission-critical cooling provider for AI data centers. When compute density skyrockets, cooling transitions from a substitutable commodity to a core limiting factor. Similarly positioned at the energy bottleneck is QuantumScape (**QS.US**). Its recent mid-2026 solid-state battery technology agreement with Honda, coupled with narrower-than-expected Q2 losses, suggests next-generation energy storage is finally crossing the chasm. Further upstream, Energy Fuels (**UUUU.US**) leverages its White Mesa Mill in Utah to expand from traditional uranium processing into rare earth elements, directly addressing the vulnerabilities of the global energy transition and supply chain unbundling.

Once power and physical infrastructure are secured, the next absolute limit is data transmission and edge compute—effectively embedding digital capabilities into the physical world. Ambarella (**AMBA.US**) has recently enjoyed a surge in Wall Street enthusiasm, fueled by its positioning in "Physical AI" for autonomous driving and ADAS systems. They are, in effect, building edge aggregation for physical hardware. On the data center side, Lightwave Logic (**LWLG.US**)—despite seeing significant stock volatility following the appointment of its new CFO in **July 2026**—is targeting the sheer physics of optical modulation speeds with its polymer photonics PDK (version 1.1 released in **May 2026**). Meanwhile, BOXX Technologies (**BOXX.US**) carves out a lucrative niche by supplying high-performance workstations optimized for AI and engineering workflows.

This means that value capture isn't always about moving up the software stack; sometimes, it is about repairing the friction of the real world. United States Antimony Corporation (**UAMY.US**) recently delivered its first batch of antimony metal in **Q2 2026** under a **USD 245M** DLA contract. This is an ancient mining business regaining pricing power simply because of the decoupling of transnational supply chains. In the services sector, ServiceMaster Brands (**SERV.US**) tackles physical entropy directly, expanding its disaster recovery franchise network with dozens of new locations added through **2025**.

Then there are those attempting to digitally restructure traditional domains, with mixed results. Figure Technology Solutions (**FIGR.US**) reported a staggering **USD 4.26B** in consumer lending volume for **Q2 2026**, pricing a **USD 600M** senior notes offering to acquire Kiavi. Figure's underlying business model uses blockchain to strip the friction out of asset transactions. Contrast this with Biolase (**BLSH.US**), a dental laser manufacturer that provided a cautionary tale. Despite improving gross margins to **40%** in **Q2 2024**, the company was delisted and entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy later that year. This is a stark reminder that specialized medical hardware without software scale or ecosystem lock-in remains highly fragile.

This, though, is exactly backwards from the prevailing AI narrative. In an era where generative models threaten to eat software, the most resilient supernormal profits might not accrue to the application wrappers. Instead, they flow to the companies hoarding critical raw materials, pushing the boundaries of photonics, or simply keeping thousands of GPUs from melting down. The physical layer is striking back.
