Up to 115,380 records were compromised in the data breaches it studied throughout Canada.

Growing Cyber Risks

IBM notes in the study that some of Canada's biggest companies have already reported major cyber attacks and data breaches this year, including telecommunications firms Rogers (RCI) and Telus (TU), as well as grocery store chain Loblaw Cos. (TE: $L).

IBM says artificial intelligence (AI) can help lessen the impacts of costly data breaches. The tech company notes that organizations using AI in their security operations reported average breach costs of $5.5 million, compared with $8.91 million among companies not using AI.

Companies often use AI to find and patch vulnerabilities in their networks and systems. Some even rely on the technology for breach detection and containment, says IBM.
