# Delta, United ban humanoid and animal robots from flights

(NewsNation) — Delta and United Airlines are banning human and pet-like robots from flying in the passenger cabin or in checked luggage.

The airliners have cited safety concerns as the reason for the policy, though humanoid robots remain extremely rare.

Southwest Airlines issued a similar ban earlier in the year, after a passenger boarded with a robot companion.

Airlines are taking proactive stances against humanoid robots, which tech evangelists say will eventually become commonplace, over safety concerns regarding batteries.

The type of batteries often used to power robots are already banned on flights. Heavy lithium-ion batteries are a fire hazard if they are mishandled or explode.

Many airlines already restrict the size and number of lithium-battery-powered devices or spare batteries that can be carried on planes.

Humanoid robots also pose additional challenges when it comes to safety procedures and evacuations if located in the passenger area.

Additionally, they may require special handling if placed in the cargo hold.
