The president made the announcement alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling. The administration said the initiative is aimed at connecting veterans with employment opportunities while bolstering the trucking industry. The White House, along with the Departments of Transportation, Defense, Labor, and Veterans Affairs are involved in the initiative As a part of the initiative, the Department of Transportation will give eligible veterans expedited commercial drivers licenses (CDL). Veterans that do not have experience truck driving will be able to receive CDL training. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the GI Bill will cover as much as 100 percent of CDL tuition at programs approved by a State Approving Agency. Werner Enterprises, a transportation company, announced that as a part of the program the company will hire 1,400 veterans and veteran spouses.
