LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Micron (MU) stock declined in pre-market trading due to reports that Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies plans a second DRAM plant, potentially increasing supply and competition. Additional headwinds include Apple's efforts to reduce memory costs by diversifying suppliers and investor Michael Burry increasing his short position in Micron. Despite these near-term concerns and recent profit-taking, Wall Street analysts maintain a Strong Buy consensus with an average price target of $1,569, citing long-term strength driven by AI data center demand.

Shares of Micron Technology (MU) slipped in pre-market trading on Monday after reports said Chinese memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) plans to build a second DRAM plant in Beijing. The expansion could increase future memory-chip supply nd add to competition for the industry's leading players. Investors are also weighing other concerns, including Apple's (AAPL) efforts to reduce memory costs and Michael Burry's larger short position in Micron.

China's Expansion Raises New Questions

CXMT is China's largest memory-chip maker. The planned factory would add to its existing three DRAM plants, each capable of producing about 100,000 wafers per month. If the Beijing project moves ahead along with planned expansions in Shanghai and Hefei, the company's total production capacity could more than double.

The expansion could increase competition for Micron, Samsung (SSNLF), and SK Hynix (HKSY). If much more DRAM capacity comes online, memory-chip supply could rise over time. That could reduce the pricing power that has helped drive strong profits for the industry's leading companies.

Several Other Concerns Are Weighing on Micron

Several other developments have also made investors more cautious about Micron.

Last week, during Apple's (AAPL) earnings call, CEO Tim Cook described the surge in memory-chip costs as a "100-year flood." The comments initially lifted Micron shares because they highlighted strong demand and pricing power for memory-chip makers. However, Cook also said Apple is looking at additional suppliers to help lower those costs. That raised concerns that large customers could gradually reduce their reliance on today's leading memory-chip suppliers.

At the same time, The Big Short investor Michael Burry disclosed a larger short position in Micron, adding to the cautious mood. The stock has also faced profit-taking after its recent rally, as some investors locked in gains.

Analysts Still See Long-Term Strength

Despite the recent weakness, several Wall Street analysts believe the long-term outlook for memory chips remains strong.

KeyBanc analyst John Vinh recently raised his price target on Micron. He said strong demand from AI data centers continues to tighten memory supply. Vinh also expects "higher prices and continued shortages" to support the industry.

Like Vinh, TD Cowen analyst Krish Sankar is also optimistic about Micron's growth potential. Sankar has a Buy rating on MU stock with a price target of $1,600. After meeting with management, Sankar said Micron expects tight supply conditions to continue beyond 2027.

Is MU Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Currently, Wall Street has a Strong Buy consensus rating on Micron stock based on 29 Buys and one Hold. The average MU stock price target of $1,569.29 indicates 91% upside potential.
