According to the company’s financial report released on Tuesday, SpaceX has increased its procurement of Tesla Megapacks, spending $295 million on the battery storage equipment in the second quarter, totaling $329 million so far this year.

These industrial-grade batteries are likely to be deployed at the company's xAI data centers. Before the merger with SpaceX, the AI company had already purchased $430 million worth of Megapacks for its data centers. SpaceX also disclosed in regulatory filings that it has purchased $131 million worth of Tesla Cybertrucks at the manufacturer's suggested retail price by December 2025.
Although xAI heavily relies on natural gas to power its data centers—having installed dozens of unlicensed turbines at a site near the Colossus data center project in Mississippi—large batteries like Megapacks remain a critical component of the data centers.
In addition to providing a large amount of backup power in less than a second, the batteries can also supply extra power to GPUs when needed. The power consumption of AI data centers is not constant but fluctuates with the demands of AI model training and inference operations.
Such power peaks can lead local utility companies to charge high fees or overwhelm on-site generators. Batteries help to smooth out these peaks, ensuring stable operation of the data centers while reducing costs
