# A New Mexico judge orders Meta to pay $567 million

The court ordered Meta to pay $567 million to a special relief fund to address the damages suffered by youth mental health. The ruling was issued by Chief Judge Brian Biedscheid of the District Court on Thursday. In the opinion, the judge wrote: "Although Meta is not the only entity with this issue, substantial evidence in this case confirms that its social media platforms are significant contributors to the current mental health crisis among youth in New Mexico." He pointed out: "Meta deliberately designed its platform to maximize user engagement, and some of these mechanisms can harm adolescents, while failing to adequately disclose the associated risks to users." The relief fund is an addition to the $375 million civil penalty imposed in the first phase of the trial. The first phase primarily focused on whether Meta's actions violated the state's Unfair Practices Act
