# Hong Kong Financial Sector's Tech Pivot: Inside the Latest Moves of 4 Core Institutions

The Hong Kong financial and securities sector is quietly undergoing a major overhaul this quarter. I'm told that several prominent commercial banks and brokerages are accelerating their shift toward technology investments and cross-border financing. Following a series of executive transitions finalized recently, the strategic focus for these institutions in the second half of 2026 is poised for a material pivot. This maneuver is aimed at securing new profit centers amid a prolonged high-interest-rate environment and an emerging tech cycle.

### China CITIC Bank (0998.HK)

Internal restructuring and capital reallocation at China CITIC Bank have been particularly intense recently. I'm told that Shen Qiang, CEO of CNCBI (CITIC Bank International), stepped down in August 2026, with Wang Junwei tapped to take the helm. This appointment, which is pending regulatory approval, marks the bank's most significant management reshuffle this year and is expected to directly shape its upcoming strategic priorities.

On the credit side, the bank's capital is increasingly flowing into hard-tech sectors. According to people familiar with the matter, its Nanjing branch recently deployed RMB 189 million via convertible bonds to precisely fund a semiconductor tech firm. Furthermore, the bank registered several software copyrights in August, including the "Little Tianyuan Platform V1.0," and its parent group signed a strategic pact with China Electronics. Benefiting from this optimized business structure, the stock has recently outperformed the broader market.

### BOCOM International (3329.HK)

As a veteran Hong Kong investment bank, BOCOM International is aggressively doubling down on the venture capital ecosystem. I'm told that the highly anticipated Victoria Harbour Hub Tech Fund officially launched in late July 2026. This represents a pioneering fund jointly backed by the Hong Kong government and mainland institutions. BOCOM International is serving as a co-manager, with its subsidiary injecting HKD 100 million into the fund. The initial pipeline has already locked in nine cross-border tech projects.

In the asset management division, the firm's fixed-income portfolio is seeing rapid expansion. Between May and July alone, BOCOM International's subsidiaries deployed tens of millions of dollars to acquire various notes, including ORIEAS, ABNA, and EBRD issuances. On the underwriting front, the firm acted as a lead sponsor for Haipaike's Hong Kong IPO this month. Driven by these developments, the stock has shown signs of bottoming out and rebounding over the past month.

### CICC (3908.HK)

CICC's investment banking and underwriting arm is experiencing a massive wave of project completions in the third quarter of 2026. I'm told that in July alone, CICC spearheaded several blockbuster domestic and offshore IPOs, including the STAR Market debut of DRAM leader CXMT, as well as the Hong Kong listings of optical module giant Zhongji Innolight and wafer foundry Nexchip. These deals have solidified its dominant position in the underwriting landscape and contributed substantially to its fee income.

Additionally, CICC continues to play a pivotal role in the broader narrative of RMB internationalization. The firm recently assisted Indonesia in pricing its inaugural sovereign Panda bond and co-founded the Global Go-Out Cooperation Alliance in July. Despite broader macroeconomic headwinds, the stock has recently recovered from earlier pullbacks, attracting renewed institutional attention.
