# Citi Slashes JetBlue Rating to 'Sell' Citing Leisure Travel Slowdown Concerns

Citi just took a dimmer view of JetBlue Airways, cutting its rating from neutral to sell. The firm also chopped its price target to $5.30, down from $6.60, pointing to possible 14% downside based on recent closing prices. This move comes on the back of worries that demand for leisure travel might be heading south as we move into the fall.

John Godyn, Citi's analyst, highlighted concerns about JetBlue's leisure-heavy route network. He suggested this focus could cause the airline to lag behind bigger competitors in revenue per available seat mile (RASM) as consumer spending tightens amid rising inflation. Citi sees the major airlines as better positioned to navigate a mixed and potentially choppier environment.

JetBlue's shares have enjoyed a nice run, climbing about 36% so far this year. The airline's pivot towards a more profitability-driven approach and its efforts to expand capacity have helped fuel this growth. Still, Citi argues that these gains might already be baked into the stock, as JetBlue trades near its peer average at roughly 6.2 times price-to-earnings.

Macroeconomic headwinds, especially persistent inflation, are suspected to weigh on leisure travel budgets. That makes JetBlue's risk-return equation less attractive heading into the fall months. Another factor Citi flagged was diminished odds of JetBlue striking a consolidation deal with other carriers, which had been considered a potential growth catalyst.

While most of JetBlue's analyst coverage remains mixed, with many holding positions rather than outright selling, Citi's downgrade signals caution. Out of 19 analysts tracking the airline, a plurality maintain hold ratings, and several others lean towards underperform or sell. Citi's stance underscores the market's ongoing uncertainty about the sector's near-term dynamic.

Inflation pressures and consumer behavior shifts are forcing airlines to reassess their strategies. For JetBlue, which has leaned into leisure travel, the challenge will be navigating a segment vulnerable to economic slowdowns. The airline's attempts to broaden its footprint now intersect with a tricky demand environment that might delay or soften profit growth.

With summer winding down and traditional travel season slowing, investors will be watching how JetBlue manages expectations in this more challenging climate. This downgrade invites a closer look at whether enthusiasm for JetBlue's recent growth can hold steady as broader economic factors come into play.

Is JetBlue's leisure heavy exposure a ticking time bomb, or can the company leverage its new strategy to defy inflation's drag? Time will tell if Citi's more bearish view is a warning or an outlier in the crowded airline analyst community.
