description: "Rentokil Initial (LON:RTO) trades ex-dividend in three days, paying US$0.0448 per share on September 21st. Despite a 2.5% yield and comfortable free cash flow coverage (44%), the dividend is risky as it consumes 100% of profits. With flat earnings over five years and high payout ratios, Simply Wall St advises against buying the stock for its dividend due to sustainability concerns."

# It Might Not Be A Great Idea To Buy Rentokil Initial plc (LON:RTO) For Its Next Dividend

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see **Rentokil Initial plc** (LON:RTO) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. The ex-dividend date is usually set to be two business days before the record date, which is the cut-off date on which you must be present on the company's books as a shareholder in order to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is of consequence because whenever a stock is bought or sold, the trade can take two business days or more to settle. This means that investors who purchase Rentokil Initial's shares on or after the 13th of August will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 21st of September.

The company's next dividend payment will be US$0.0448 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of US$0.12 to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that Rentokil Initial has a trailing yield of 2.5% on the current share price of UK£3.601. Dividends are an important source of income to many shareholders, but the health of the business is crucial to maintaining those dividends. That's why we should always check whether the dividend payments appear sustainable, and if the company is growing.

Dividends are usually paid out of company profits, so if a company pays out more than it earned then its dividend is usually at greater risk of being cut. Last year Rentokil Initial paid out 100% of its profits as dividends to shareholders, suggesting the dividend is not well covered by earnings. A useful secondary check can be to evaluate whether Rentokil Initial generated enough free cash flow to afford its dividend. It distributed 44% of its free cash flow as dividends, a comfortable payout level for most companies.

It's good to see that while Rentokil Initial's dividends were not well covered by profits, at least they are affordable from a cash perspective. Still, if the company continues paying out such a high percentage of its profits, the dividend could be at risk if business turns sour.

## Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Stocks with flat earnings can still be attractive dividend payers, but it is important to be more conservative with your approach and demand a greater margin for safety when it comes to dividend sustainability. If earnings fall far enough, the company could be forced to cut its dividend. That explains why we're not overly excited about Rentokil Initial's flat earnings over the past five years. We'd take that over an earnings decline any day, but in the long run, the best dividend stocks all grow their earnings per share.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. In the last 10 years, Rentokil Initial has lifted its dividend by approximately 12% a year on average.

## To Sum It Up

Has Rentokil Initial got what it takes to maintain its dividend payments? Earnings per share have been effectively flat, which is a bit of a concern given the company is paying out 100% of its profit as dividends, which we feel is uncomfortably high. With the way things are shaping up from a dividend perspective, we'd be inclined to steer clear of Rentokil Initial.
