Tokenmaxxing Practices Out at Microsoft: Microsoft Stock (NASDAQ:MSFT) Gains
I'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.Microsoft is curbing 'tokenmaxxing' by limiting AI token usage to improve fiscal discipline, prompting a 1.5% stock gain. The company is shifting to cheaper models like GPT-5.6 and emphasizing cost-awareness among staff. Meanwhile, Blizzard Entertainment has become Microsoft's top game studio with strong performance in Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Diablo. Wall Street maintains a Strong Buy consensus on MSFT, with an average price target of $560.13.
Fiscal discipline seems to be back on the menu at tech giant Microsoft (MSFT), which recently revealed that it was putting limits on its staff's use of artificial intelligence. The so-called practice of "tokenmaxxing," using the largest amounts of artificial intelligence (AI) tokens possible to demonstrate productivity, is out of favor. Investors applauded the return to sanity, and gave Microsoft over a 1.5% boost in Monday afternoon's trading.

Microsoft is shifting to cheaper models, reports note, with the new default for engineers being GPT-5.6. And with more use going toward agents rather than reasoning-based alternatives, there is a greater reason to economize. Agentic tools are more expensive than reasoning-based models, so using less AI in general is starting to be a more preferable option. The process is slow, and incomplete, but is moving in that direction.
Word from executive vice president Jay Parikh made it clear: staff need to be more aware of how tokens are consumed. Parikh noted: "I want all of us focused on maximizing outcomes that move the needle for customers and our business. As such, we are updating our internal guidance and managing token spend with the same discipline we apply to every other critical resource."
New Top Dog
Meanwhile, new reports note that Microsoft has a new leader among its video game studios. Blizzard Entertainment is now the best studio Microsoft has, with Overwatch rapidly improving, World of Warcraft still drawing in players, and the Diablo franchise recently landing a major expansion in Lord of Hatred, which is giving players more of what it wants in a big way.
This raises a particularly interesting point as BlizzCon is set to hit in just a few weeks. A new Warcraft expansion, The Last Titan, should get a reveal at the big event, as well as mobile game spin-offs and even some television adaptations of the kind that put new life into the Fallout franchise. Blizzard has a real opportunity here to keep itself on top, a point that should be helpful given recent cutbacks in the Xbox division.
Is Microsoft a Buy, Hold or Sell?

After a 4.17% loss in its share price over the past year, the average MSFT price target of $560.13 per share implies 10.19% upside potential.
