# Mixed Signals in Hong Kong Equities: Tech and Mining Resilient as Financials Face Headwinds

As the mid-2026 earnings season approaches, market participants and institutional investors are increasingly open to the view that the recovery in Hong Kong equities will be a highly bifurcated process. From recent profit alerts to foreign institutional repositioning, the signals emanating from various sectors point to starkly different fundamental realities. If this divergence continues, funds could lean heavily toward sectors with clear earnings visibility.

In the advanced manufacturing and consumer electronics supply chain, signals of earnings expansion are particularly robust. Cowell eHoldings (1415.HK) recently became a focal point after issuing a profit alert, projecting up to a **40%** year-over-year increase in its net profit for H1 2026. Buoyed by this forecast, the stock saw a strong intraday rally recently, outperforming the broader market and suggesting that the recovery in smartphone optical components is solidifying. A similarly positive signal came from the newly listed BASiC Semiconductor (9971.HK). As a silicon carbide pure-play listed under the Chapter 18C regime, it not only secured massive IPO oversubscription but also recently announced price hikes of up to **25%** for its products. Translation: Robust end-market demand for scarce power devices is granting these companies rare pricing power, and the market is pricing that in.

However, across traditional industrial and resource sectors, market views remain distinctly divided. On one hand, Wanguo Gold Group (3939.HK) issued a strong profit warning, expecting its interim profit to jump between **46.4%** and **53.1%**, illustrating the hedging value of metal concentrates like gold and copper in the current macroeconomic environment. On the other hand, Q1 2026 data from Sany Heavy Equipment International Holdings (0631.HK) revealed a different reality: despite a **13.2%** year-over-year revenue increase, net profit dropped **19.8%**. The margin compression firmly signals that its equipment sales are facing intense price competition and rising cost pressures.

Macroeconomic reassessments are also leaving their mark on utilities and financials. CGN Power (1816.HK) saw institutional reductions from Citigroup and BlackRock in late June 2026, a move that could flag tactical profit-taking by foreign capital in certain defensive high-yield names. Meanwhile, BOCOM International Holdings (3329.HK) signaled a shift toward diversified yields in the current rate environment through recent investments in an innovation fund and **USD 10M** in floating-rate notes in late July. For Minsheng Bank (1988.HK), which is set to report earnings soon, investors remain restrained; its revenue decline in 2025 and historically weak profit growth leave the door open to ongoing skepticism about a turning point in asset quality.

Signals of a turnaround in services and real estate-adjacent sectors remain muted. As a real estate transaction service provider in China, E-House (China) Enterprise Holdings (2048.HK) finds its fundamentals deeply tied to the broader stabilization of the property market. In the exhibition and brand activation space, while Pico Far East Holdings (0752.HK) has maintained dividend commitments and global operations, market participants have flagged concerns over its trade receivables and cash flow quality. Furthermore, downside risks from external macro environments were evident in the recent pullback of the CSOP Nikkei 225 Daily (2x) Leveraged Product (7262.HK), reminding investors that cross-border volatility is elevated.

The next key focal point will be the peak of the earnings reporting period in late August. If margin contractions in traditional sectors fail to stabilize, institutional investors appear set to leave the door open for further defensive repositioning.
