# The Misfit Toys of Hong Kong Equities: Who is Actually Working and Who is Faking It

I have said this a million times: if you want to understand the actual temperature of the Hong Kong market, stop staring at the same three tech giants everyone else is obsessed with. Look at the forgotten corners, the so-called "other" equities. These companies are like an island of misfit toys. Some are legitimately trying to reinvent themselves, while others are just sleepwalking through the macro cycle. Halfway through 2026, this survival game is fully underway.

Let’s start with the ones actually doing the work. TCL Electronics (0621.HK) just delivered a massive slap in the face to its doubters with its first-half 2026 profit alert. Adjusted net profit is expected to jump roughly **40%** to **56%** year-over-year. I do not care if you think the consumer electronics space is a bloodbath—squeezing out that kind of profit growth is serious execution. The stock has been resilient recently, and for good reason.

Over in the pharmaceutical aisle, two legacy players are desperate to prove they aren’t dinosaurs. Livzon Pharmaceutical (1953.HK) has been on a tear with its pipeline in 2026, getting its NDA accepted for a dual-target AS drug in June and churning out clinical updates in July. Meanwhile, SSY Group (2005.HK) secured approval for its Ziprasidone Hydrochloride API this August. Both names have seen their shares tick up recently. Here is the bottom line: I do not care how boring a 70-year-old pharma company seems, regulatory approvals and clinical data are the only currencies that matter.

But then we have the trainwrecks. IRICO New Energy (3681.HK) is warning that its net loss for the first half of 2026 will balloon to up to **RMB 495 million**. Yes, solar PV glass prices are falling, and yes, it is a cyclical nightmare. But why aren't you moving faster to adjust capacity? Good luck with that, because this shakeout is far from over. Their shares have been bleeding all year, unsurprisingly.

And of course, it wouldn't be Hong Kong without the sprawling, opaque conglomerate families. Shun Tak Holdings (0830.HK), Chuang's Consortium (0805.HK), and Chinney Investments (1611.HK) are still shuffling around their properties, hotels, and obscure investments. Shun Tak’s most notable recent PR push in early 2026 was participating in a Guinness World Record for a musical marathon. This is stupid and here's why: when investors are begging for operational efficiency and asset monetization, a PR stunt will not stop your stock from underperforming the broader market. Similarly, state-backed Great Wall Pan Asia Holdings (2422.HK) appointed a new CEO, Wang Haoming, in March 2026. Let’s hope he actually does something with the offshore AMC platform instead of just maintaining the status quo.

Finally, Tianjie Environment (1546.HK) is still selling dust collectors, while its chairman is out donating pianos to rural schools. Philanthropy is great, but investors would rather see a spike in industrial equipment orders.

This basket of "others" is a fascinating reality check. The market does not care about your legacy. You either deliver actual earnings growth or you rot in a low-liquidity purgatory. Get to work.
