# Walt Disney's (DIS) New Slate of Films Relies Heavily on Animation and Sequels

Walt Disney Co. (DIS) has unveiled a new slate of films for 2027 that relies heavily on animated movies and sequels.

The world's largest entertainment company is planning to release sequels over the coming year to some of its most popular animated movie franchises such as "Zootopia" and "Frozen." The new films were unveiled at the the company's annual D23 event and announced by Disney's new CEO Josh D'Amaro, who replaced former CEO Bob Iger in March of this year.

In addition to a mostly animated movie line-up, Disney is also continuing its trend of producing live action versions of its most popular cartoon movies. Next year will see the Mouse House release a live action rendition of its film "Tangled." The company is hoping the upcoming movies can help give a lift to DIS stock, which is down 8% this year.

## **Disney's Summer Success**

Disney went into this year's D23 event on a high note having scored major box office success this summer with the release of Pixar's "Toy Story 5" and Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." Toy Story 5 has grossed $1.1 billion worldwide and become the highest-grossing film in the popular series. 

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned $2 billion at the global box office three weeks after its release, making it the highest grossing Spider-Man film to date. So far in 2026, the global box office has totaled $6.87 billion, nearly 20% higher than at this point last year, as people return to theaters.

Since taking the helm of Disney, D'Amaro has said that he plans to focus on investing in existing and already successful intellectual property and established characters. 

## **Is DIS Stock a Buy?**

Walt Disney's stock has a consensus Strong Buy rating among 18 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 17 Buy and one Hold recommendation issued in the last three months. The average DIS price target of $127.11 implies 25% upside from current levels.
