description: "Nestle is leveraging AI to develop products targeting consumers using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, aiming to address muscle loss and shifting dietary habits. This strategy seeks to capitalize on the growing market for protein and functional nutrition while defending against declining demand for traditional snacks. With millions of users expected by 2030, Nestle's success depends on whether these new offerings drive real internal growth and offset potential losses in higher-margin categories."

# Nestle Turns to AI as Ozempic Changes How America Eats

Nestle (NSRGY) is leaning on artificial intelligence to turn one of the packaged-food industry's biggest threats into a growth opportunity, developing products specifically for consumers using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. For investors, the push matters because drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound are changing how millions of consumers eat, potentially pressuring traditional snack and prepared-food demand while creating a new market for protein and functional nutrition.

"It's a huge opportunity," Nestle Chief Technology Officer Stefan Palzer told Reuters, saying AI helps the company analyze clinical research and identify products that could address issues associated with rapid weight loss.

Nestle is targeting muscle loss in particular. The company has developed micronutrient combinations intended to stimulate muscle growth alongside protein consumption and has introduced Boost Advanced Nutritional Shake in the U.S. with 35 grams of protein. It is also adding collagen protein to Vital Proteins products to target skin, hair and nail concerns.

AI tools including Nestle's Food Genie are being used to predict recipe performance, identify reformulation opportunities and simulate how consumers may respond to products and health claims before launch.

The addressable market is expanding rapidly. Boston Consulting Group estimates roughly 16 million Americans currently use GLP-1 drugs, with its base case reaching about 32 million by 2030. Its latest consumer research also found GLP-1 users shifting spending toward protein drinks, high-protein foods, fiber and other functional products while cutting spending on snacks, soft drinks and sweets.

That makes Nestle's strategy partly defensive. The company already introduced its Vital Pursuit line specifically for GLP-1 users, emphasizing protein, fiber, nutrients and smaller portions.

**Investor Takeaway**

Investors should watch whether these products generate meaningful **real internal growth**, rather than merely shifting sales between Nestle brands.

That is especially important after Nestle reported 3.7% organic growth and 1.8% real internal growth in the second quarter, while its first-half underlying trading operating profit margin stood at 16.4%. Management currently expects 2026 organic growth of 3% to 4% and free cash flow above CHF 9 billion.

The upside case strengthens if Boost, Vital Proteins and other health-science products capture spending moving away from traditional packaged foods. The risk is that GLP-1 adoption shrinks higher-margin food categories faster than Nestle can build its nutrition business.

For investors, future earnings should therefore be judged not only on GLP-1 product launches, but on **volume growth, nutrition-category sales, margins and evidence that AI is shortening product-development cycles**. Those metrics will determine whether Nestle is adapting to GLP-1 disruption or simply defending against it.
