Halliburton, one of the world’s largest oil services companies and a leader in hydraulic fracturing technologies, has already started conducting studies in unconventional hydrocarbon areas and reservoirs and is planning to extend them to all Egypt. Halliburton’s vice president for North Africa Ahmed Helmy revealed the plans at talks with Egypt’s petroleum and mineral resources minister Karim Badawi in Cairo on Tuesday, the ministry said in a statement. Badawi asked the US company, which is extensively operating in Egypt, to prepare “specific and feasible technical and economic studies of available opportunities to increase production in various regions of Egypt, the statement said. “The minister asked the company to focus on horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies, and to study the best applications that can be implemented according to the characteristics of each region,” it added. Helmy said Halliburton has already begun preparing specialised studies to identify opportunities in unconventional areas and reservoirs with the aim of increasing production, improving operational efficiency, and reducing costs. “Halliburton intends to conduct a comprehensive economic and technical study across Egypt in the coming months to identify the best opportunities for implementing horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies, based on the nature and production potential of each reservoir,” Helmy said. “The studies conducted so far by the company showed promising potential to increase production and improve performance in a number of areas and companies.” Badawi said last month that Egypt, which has suffered from a decline in hydrocarbon deposits and output over the past few years, is planning to deploy fracking and other cutting-edge techniques to develop its oilfields. Badawi said payment of all debt to foreign energy companies operating in the third largest Arab economy has put Egypt’s oil and gas sector back on track, with production starting to grow for the first time since 2021.
