# Micron CEO: AI Completely Rewrites the Logic of Memory Chip Cycles, Customer Demand Exceeds Company Supply by Approximately 50%

AI-driven memory demand is overturning the industry's decades-long boom-and-bust cycle.

According to CNBC, Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron Tech, stated on Thursday (August 20) that artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the demand logic of the memory chip industry, transforming it from **a highly cyclical commodity market into an indispensable strategic component of AI infrastructure**. In an interview on CNBC's "Mad Money" program, he stated plainly:

> "Today, there is no AI without memory. AI systems require more memory, higher-performance memory, and lower-power memory. The value equation for memory has completely changed."

On the demand side, Mehrotra revealed that **data center customers' current purchasing intent is approximately 150% of Micron's actual commitable supply, meaning demand exceeds supply by about 50%, and the company's production capacity still cannot meet market demand**. Meanwhile, Micron is locking in customer demand through long-term strategic agreements to reduce exposure to spot market volatility—another important signal of the industry's structural shift.

## AI Reshapes Memory Demand Structure, Cyclical Logic Faces Disintegration

The memory chip industry has long been known for its cyclicality: manufacturers expand production when demand is strong, excess capacity subsequently drives down prices, and the industry falls into a trough. This cycle has repeated itself over the past few decades.

Mehrotra believes that AI is breaking this pattern. With over 40 years of experience in the chip industry and having previously co-founded SanDisk, he has a profound understanding of industry cycles. In his view, AI brings a more sustainable structural demand rather than short-term pulse-like stimulation.

> "Memory is indispensable today, which is why I call it strategic infrastructure for the AI era."

He further pointed out that AI's demand for memory is not limited to data centers; autonomous vehicles, robotics, and AI-enabled consumer electronic devices **will all require significant increases in memory capacity in the future**. This means demand sources are becoming more diversified, and the industry's demand base is broader than ever before.

## Memory Shifts from "Price-Comparison Procurement" to "Collaborative Design," Fundamentally Changing Bargaining Logic

AI has not only changed the magnitude of memory demand but also the way customers procure memory, thereby affecting Micron's market positioning and pricing power.

Mehrotra stated that in the past, the logic for customers procuring memory chips was relatively simple—seeking quotes widely and choosing the supplier with the lowest price. However, as AI systems impose increasingly stringent requirements on memory performance, memory must be co-designed with processors and the overall system to fully unleash performance. This has evolved memory from a replaceable generic component into a key variable determining the performance of the entire system.

"**We are collaborating closely with customers at earlier stages of their development cycles,**" Mehrotra said. "**Our customers recognize the value of memory because it is the key enabling them to design products that drive their own growth engines.**"

Analysts believe this shift has profound implications for Micron's business model: **deeper customer binding and earlier involvement in product development mean stronger pricing power and more stable revenue sources.**

## Significant Capacity Gap, Long-Term Agreements Lock in Demand Visibility

Although Micron is expanding production on a large scale, Mehrotra admitted that the company's current capacity is still far from sufficient to meet market demand.

"**All our customers across all end markets will buy everything we can produce,**" he said, specifically pointing out that **data center customers currently wish to obtain supply volumes approximately 50% higher than what Micron can commit.**

**To address this supply-demand gap and enhance predictability on the demand side, Micron is actively advancing long-term strategic cooperation agreements.** At its latest earnings conference call in late June, Micron announced that it had signed five-year strategic agreements with 16 customers. Mehrotra revealed in this interview that the company has since signed additional agreements.

"They have committed to taking supply," Mehrotra said. "This gives us assurance on the demand side."

The advancement of long-term agreements marks Micron's systematic reduction of reliance on spot market price fluctuations—for a company historically plagued by cyclical volatility, this represents a significant upgrade in its business model.
