# Biggest Mystery After Apple's September Leadership Change: Will It Splash Cash to Acquire a Major AI Company?

Apple's hardware chief John Ternus will succeed Tim Cook as CEO this September. The Apple of the Tim Cook era was known for its scale and execution, but appeared overly conservative in the AI arms race. With the baton passing this September, Wall Street is betting on whether the new leader can guide the world's second-largest company by market capitalization through a genuine strategic transformation.

Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan raised a core question in his latest research report: "Can Apple transition from an era driven by scale and execution to a new era driven by AI innovation?" This question has directly fueled market imagination regarding Apple's future strategic direction.

Mohan believes that Apple is gradually abandoning its long-held net cash neutral stance in favor of increased spending, **a sign that "may herald a period of more intensive R&D investment," and potentially even large-scale mergers and acquisitions. Against the backdrop of other tech giants having already invested hundreds of billions of dollars in AI, whether Apple will make up for lost ground during the new CEO's tenure has become the core suspense most closely watched by investors.**

## Cook's Legacy: The Glory and Limitations of the Scale Machine

Cook led Apple for nearly 15 years, building it into the king of scale in the global consumer electronics sector.

Under his leadership, Apple established an efficient supply chain management system, continuously monetizing a massive user base of over 2.5 billion devices through services like Apple Pay and Apple Music, while establishing user privacy as a core brand value.

However, this operational philosophy, renowned for its execution and discipline, has become a focal point of controversy in the AI era. While tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon competed to make heavy investments in AI infrastructure and platform innovation, Apple chose to wait and proceed with caution.

Some investors criticized that **Apple has clearly fallen behind in AI infrastructure construction and platform innovation; however, others argue that it is precisely this restraint that makes Apple a stable alternative in tech stock portfolios—compared to peers burning cash heavily in pursuit of uncertain returns.**

## Ternus's Core Challenge: Balancing Innovation with the Existing Profit Machine

As Apple's head of hardware engineering, Ternus was deeply involved in advancing Apple's strategy for self-developed chips. Mohan expects that **Apple's core business will remain largely stable under the new CEO, but Ternus also faces pressures not directly confronted by his predecessor—making bigger bets at a faster pace in a cycle of accelerating AI innovation.**

Mohan wrote in the report: "Apple is already large enough, highly profitable, and deeply embedded in users' lives. Mere 'incremental improvement' may no longer be sufficient to redefine the company. Ternus's challenge lies in guarding the profit machine built by Cook while reigniting market expectations for technological surprises from Apple."

In terms of specific directions, **Ternus needs to drive the integration of AI capabilities into Apple's hardware product line and promote the adoption of AI features across its user base of 2.5 billion devices. This vast distribution network is Apple's unique competitive advantage, but whether it can translate into substantial growth depends on whether AI features can tangibly enhance users' daily experiences.**

## Apple Intelligence Rollout: Can Siri Complete Its Metamorphosis?

Apple's Apple Intelligence features and the revamped Siri will officially roll out to users this autumn—a full two years after these features were first announced. The market's patience with Apple's AI implementation progress is being tested.

Mohan pointed out that **a truly competitive Siri must go beyond the capabilities of basic chatbots, able to access personalized contextual information on-device and execute complex, multi-step task workflows. This places higher demands on Apple's integration capabilities in chips, operating systems, on-device processing, and privacy protection.**

Mohan wrote: "Leveraging Apple's self-developed chips, on-device processing, privacy architecture, operating system, personal contextual data, and massive installed base, Ternus is poised to further consolidate Apple's dominance in on-device AI in the AI-enabled era." This is also the core of whether Apple can carve out a differentiated path in this round of the AI race.

## Large-Scale M&A: Never Before, But Perhaps Coming

Apple has rarely engaged in large-scale acquisitions in its history, forming a sharp contrast with other tech giants that rapidly bolstered their AI capabilities through M&A. However, Apple's move this year to prematurely abandon its net cash neutral stance has been interpreted by some analysts as a strategic signal.

Mohan explicitly stated that large-scale R&D investment and major M&A "were not heavily emphasized during the Cook era," but the technological acceleration of the AI era may force Apple to change this convention. For investors, whether Ternus will lead a truly large-scale AI acquisition will be the most direct litmus test of the new management's strategic boldness.
