# 折叠屏 iPhone 或助力苹果 (AAPL.US)“魔力” 回归！涨价、新家庭设备蓄势待发

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Apple (AAPL.US) is about to regain some of its "magic" with the launch of its first foldable iPhone. Additionally, the company is considering raising the price of the new iPhone to be released next month, while also preparing to adjust the layout of its retail stores to support a series of new home devices.

**Apple's Foldable iPhone Will Regain "Magic"**

Over the past decade, the number of truly exciting new products from Apple has gradually decreased. Although Apple has launched some impressive products, such as the AirPods in 2016, the redesigned iPad Pro in 2018, the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022, and the Vision Pro in 2024, this is nothing compared to the era initiated by the original iPhone—when the iPhone was followed by the MacBook Air, iPad and iPad 2, iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, as well as the first-generation Apple Watch.

The good news is that this situation is about to change—some of Apple's "magic" is returning.

The foldable iPhone, expected to be unveiled around September 9, is the most exciting new product from Apple in years. Watching videos, playing games, and handling work on a foldable phone is nearly unmatched in the entire mobile device sector. It is much more convenient than pulling out a tablet, and the versatility of such a device is indeed impressive. You can easily switch between a device that feels like a traditional smartphone and a larger-sized device—the former is suitable for quickly checking information, texting, and making calls, while the latter is ideal for entertainment, participating in video conferences, or enhancing work efficiency.

Admittedly, Samsung has already launched a similar design with the Z Fold 8, which has somewhat overshadowed Apple's upcoming launch. However, this further proves that this new form factor is successful. Tests show that Samsung's device is indeed very user-friendly. Apple's new product is expected to take it a step further.

Users who have experienced this Apple model appreciate its pocket-friendly size, the feel and durability brought by the advanced hinge mechanism, and the new app layout similar to the iPad—these layouts fully utilize the larger internal display. It will be a high-end device that not only brings a halo effect to the entire Apple product lineup but also serves as a marketing engine to attract consumers into retail stores.

Of course, Apple's entry comes surprisingly late. Foldable phones have been around for years, and companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Google have completed extensive category optimization work. However, Apple's brand, advertising marketing machine, and large user base mean that millions of consumers are likely to encounter foldable phones for the first time because of the iPhone.

This could also benefit Apple's competitors. The iPhone will significantly raise consumer awareness of foldable phones, potentially pushing Android users who want this form factor but do not wish to enter the Apple ecosystem towards Samsung and Google. Both of Apple's competitors continue to offer foldable phones with larger displays, including the Z Fold 8 Ultra and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, so some users may even view these models as higher-end options In addition to productivity, video, and gaming experiences, the foldable iPhone also performs exceptionally well as a camera viewfinder. However, it has a significant flaw: it lacks a telephoto camera. This could result in some lost sales for Apple. The phone is expected to be priced over $2,000, and the user base willing to pay a high price for an early adopter product while placing a strong emphasis on advanced camera features—including enhanced zoom capabilities—may overlap significantly.

At this price level, consumers will naturally expect Apple to provide the best camera system—but this may not be the case for at least the next few years. Another factor to consider is that this product uses Touch ID for user authentication instead of the Face ID that has become standard today. For some consumers, this may feel like a step backward. However, it’s worth remembering that when Face ID was first introduced, many people also stated that Touch ID was already very useful and there was no need for a change. Many still prefer using the fingerprint sensor on their Mac and iPad.

Another key challenge is winning over Chinese consumers, as China may become one of the most important markets for this device. Foldable phones remain a niche product globally, accounting for only about 1.6% of global smartphone shipments in 2025. But the situation in China is entirely different. Last year, China accounted for more than half of global foldable phone shipments, selling over 10 million units domestically. In other words, the number of foldable phones purchased in the Chinese market alone exceeds the total in the rest of the world.

This makes the foldable iPhone particularly important for Apple. The company has been looking for products that resonate in the Chinese market, where local competitors—especially Huawei—are more aggressive in new product design. Many Chinese consumers are pursuing two things: eye-catching hardware features and the status symbol that high-end devices provide. The foldable iPhone should be able to offer both.

**Following Samsung and Google, Apple is preparing to raise iPhone prices**

Two months ago, Apple raised the prices of nearly all major product categories except for the iPhone, with affected Mac and iPad prices increasing by an average of about 23%—the MacBook Air increased by $200, the Mac Studio by $500, and the iPad Air by $150.

As the same memory and chip supply shortages begin to affect the iPhone, a price increase for the iPhone remains inevitable. The only question is how much Apple will raise the prices.

Apple has been observing how Samsung and Google are responding to higher component costs. Both companies have raised the prices of their latest phones by about $100. If Apple follows suit with a similar increase, the price of the iPhone 18 Pro would reach $1,199, an increase of about 9%.

Given the severity of the memory supply constraints, this would be a relatively moderate price increase, which also suggests that Apple may absorb some of the additional costs. The company has already warned that gross margins will face pressure this quarter—indicating that Apple is not passing on all the rising costs to consumers Apple has no reason to push prices too high. A $100 price increase would still keep the iPhone within Samsung's price range while avoiding the "price shock" caused by steeper price hikes seen in some Mac and iPad products.

However, considering that the iPhone has a highly loyal user base, Apple still has room for further price increases (let's not forget that the increases for Mac and iPad are much larger). Additionally, the new upgrade subscription plan may alleviate the impact of price hikes through installment monthly payments.

**Apple Adjusts Retail Store Layout This Fall to Pave the Way for Home Devices**

It is worth noting that Apple is clearly preparing for the launch of significant new home products this year. The team responsible for planning the retail store layout is making space for new devices.

Apple's newer retail stores feature an area called "Avenues"—these are display areas set along the walls of the store to showcase Apple accessories like HomePod, Apple TV, AirPods, and Beats, as well as third-party products. Apple is planning major adjustments to these areas this fall, including rearranging some Avenues and increasing accessory display spots to showcase new products.

The planned renovations seem too extensive to be merely routine updates for existing products. Given the important role Apple retail stores play in introducing entirely new product categories to consumers, this arrangement makes complete sense.

Apple is already planning to launch an upgraded Apple TV set-top box and a new HomePod mini, with timing roughly aligned with this phase. However, the scale of this retail adjustment suggests that there may be other products on the way: the long-awaited home hub device with a display.

This home hub will represent a brand new form factor for Apple, equipped with a new operating system and interface, requiring consumers to understand how to use it. The current store layout is not particularly suited for showcasing such products, so Apple needs dedicated space to show consumers how this hub device works, what it can control, and how it fits into a broader home ecosystem
