# Taiwan Semiconductor's global electricity consumption reaches new heights: nearly 28.8 billion kilowatt-hours by 2025, accounting for about 10% of Taiwan's annual electricity usage

The latest sustainability report from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been released. With the rapid growth of AI and advanced process demands, competition among wafer fabs is not only about process and capacity but also the enormous power demand behind it, which has become a key factor. As the world's leading wafer foundry, TSMC's electricity consumption and green energy procurement scale continue to expand, becoming an important indicator for observing semiconductor energy demand in the AI era.

TSMC Chairman and ESG Steering Committee Chairman Wei Zhejia pointed out that the energy challenges at the foundational level of the AI era are particularly critical, stating, "Electricity drives the output of tokens, and tokens create intelligence." According to estimates from the Industrial Technology Research Institute, communication products using TSMC chips could save over 180 billion kilowatt-hours globally by 2025 and reduce nearly 89 million metric tons of carbon emissions; by 2030, for every kilowatt-hour of electricity TSMC uses to produce semiconductor products, it is expected to save nearly 7 kilowatt-hours globally.

### TSMC's global electricity consumption increases by 12.6%, equivalent to over 10% of Taiwan's annual total

The rapid expansion of AI and advanced processes has also simultaneously boosted TSMC's own electricity demand. According to the sustainability report, TSMC's non-renewable energy electricity usage in 2025 is projected to be 22.99 billion kilowatt-hours, with renewable energy electricity at 5.78 billion kilowatt-hours, totaling an estimated electricity consumption of 28.77 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 3.22 billion kilowatt-hours from 25.55 billion kilowatt-hours in 2024, representing an annual growth of approximately 12.6%.

In comparison to Taiwan's overall electricity consumption, data from the Ministry of Economic Affairs indicates that Taiwan's total electricity consumption in 2025 is expected to be around 283 billion kilowatt-hours. Based on this, TSMC's global annual electricity consumption is approximately 10.2% of Taiwan's total annual electricity consumption, an increase from about 9% in the previous year.

### Renewable energy reaches 5.78 billion kilowatt-hours, wind power becomes the largest source

As overall electricity consumption increases, TSMC is also expanding its use of renewable energy. In 2025, the renewable energy usage at global operational sites is expected to reach 5.78 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 20.1% of total electricity consumption. Among this, wind power accounts for 41%, solar energy for 33.4%, and hydropower for 24.8%, with wind power becoming TSMC's largest source of renewable energy. The demand for green electricity in Taiwan's factories continues to expand, with renewable energy accounting for 11.4% of the total electricity consumption in Taiwan's factories by 2025, and the introduction of offshore wind power for the first time. By the end of 2025, TSMC has cumulatively signed contracts for 7.3 GW of renewable energy sales, and once all projects are operational, it will supply approximately 15.8 billion kWh of green electricity annually.

The demand driven by AI is not only for chips but also amplifies the underlying electricity demand. TSMC's annual electricity consumption has increased to nearly 28.77 billion kWh, with the proportion of renewable energy usage expected to rise from the current 20.1% to 60% by 2030. As global production capacity continues to expand, TSMC's demand for green electricity from wind and solar power will inevitably increase, and its procurement trends will become a global observation indicator for the green electricity market.
