# US Treasury Secretary Announces Multiple Economic Sanctions Against Iran; Tehran Says Trade Partners 'Will Not Take Seriously' US Threats

US economic pressure on Iran has escalated once again, with Iran responding swiftly and firmly.

According to Xinhua News Agency, US Treasury Secretary Bessent held a press conference on the 24th local time to announce economic sanctions against Iran, aiming to increase pressure on the country. According to CCTV News, Bessent stated that any entity involved in money laundering for Iran would be removed from the US dollar system.

Bessent also indicated that the US would expand the scope of **secondary sanctions** against countries engaging in commercial activities with Iran, urging relevant nations to make a choice.

Iran explicitly refuted these moves. Xinhua reported that Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly Speaker Ghalibaf stated on the evening of the 24th that Iran's trade partners had already expressed that they "would not take seriously" the relevant US sanctions rhetoric. He argued that the current US economic situation did not permit further tightening of economic and trade relations with other countries.

## Bessent Announces New Round of Sanctions: Expanding Secondary Sanctions, Targeting Iran's Global Economic Links

On the 24th, Bessent held a press conference at the US Treasury Department to announce the Trump administration's new round of economic pressure measures against Iran.

Bessent referred to this move as "Economic D-Day," while the US Treasury Department described it as a comprehensive action aimed at severing Iran's remaining economic and financial connections.

According to reports, Bessent stated that the new round of sanctions aims to block all potential revenue sources for Iran and further crack down on networks helping Iran obtain funds, conduct trade, or evade US sanctions.

Expanding **secondary sanctions** is a significant component of this action.

Bessent stated that the US would expand the scope of secondary sanctions against entities and countries maintaining commercial ties with Iran. In other words, US sanctions are no longer limited to Iran itself but are further targeting third parties engaged in financial and trade activities with Iran.

Bessent particularly emphasized that any entity laundering money for Iran would be removed from the US dollar system.

This statement implies that for financial institutions or companies identified by the US as helping Iran transfer funds or evade sanctions, the risk is not only being listed on US sanctions lists but also losing access to the US dollar financial system.

## Digital Assets, Technology, Gold, Aviation, and Shipping Included in Potential Sanctions Scope

In terms of specific measures, the US is also expanding the coverage of its sanctions.

Bessent stated that sectors such as digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping would become key focuses for further implementation of secondary sanctions by the US.

The US Treasury Department simultaneously suspended previous general licenses allowing certain remittance businesses with Iran and continued to crack down on channels through which Iran obtains revenue via third-country financial and trade networks.

US media pointed out that the core objective of the Trump administration's action is to close loopholes still existing in the previous sanctions system, severing the links between Iran's oil trade and other economic activities and the global financial system.

Bessent also warned that "no one is above US sanctions."

The US has also sent a very clear signal of pressure to countries maintaining commercial ties with Iran.

Bessent stated that US President Trump is contacting leaders of other countries, requesting their support for what the US calls "economic strangulation" of Iran. The US hopes these countries will cut economic ties with Iran, otherwise they will face unilateral actions by the US.

Bessent did not disclose which countries Trump contacted, nor did he provide a specific deadline for relevant countries to take action, but he emphasized: "We do not have infinite patience."

This statement from the US government means that the target of these sanctions has expanded further from enterprises and individuals within Iran to Iran's overseas trade partners.

## Bessent Sends Strong Signal: Sanctions Against a Large Financial Institution to Be Announced This Week

Bessent also revealed on Monday that new sanction actions would not stop at the measures announced on Monday.

Bessent stated that the US expects to announce sanctions against a large financial institution before the end of the week, but did not disclose which specific institution.

When asked whether Chinese banks providing financing for Iran's oil imports could become targets of US sanctions, Bessent did not name them directly, instead stating: "No one is above US sanctions."

This also means that the so-called "Economic D-Day" by the Trump administration is not only further tightening sanctions against Iran but also exerting pressure on Iran's major trade partners.

Countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Iraq are important economic partners of Iran. Therefore, the actual impact of the US expansion of secondary sanctions largely depends on whether these countries are willing to cooperate with the US in cutting economic ties with Iran.

The Global Times published an editorial titled "China Will Not Join the US in 'Fooling Around' on the Iran Issue" last weekend. The article pointed out:

> "The US cannot even mobilize its own allies, let alone dictate terms to China. China has consistently opposed unilateral bullying and 'long-arm jurisdiction,' not because China is Iran's largest trade partner and maintains long-term friendly relations with Iran, but because accepting this US logic would lead to the absurd situation where international trade rules are unilaterally set by the US, and all commodity flows require US approval."

## Iranian Parliament Speaker Responds: Trade Partners Have Clearly Stated They 'Do Not Take Seriously'

Iran responded quickly to the new round of US sanctions threats.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly Speaker Ghalibaf posted on social media on the evening of the 24th that Iran's trade partners had clearly stated they would not take the relevant US rhetoric seriously.

Ghalibaf stated that the US side is well aware that its tough rhetoric is hard to believe, and that the current US economic situation does not allow for further tightening of economic and trade relations with other countries.

He stated that Iran's trade partners had clearly expressed through media statements and direct messaging that they **"would not take seriously"** the relevant US rhetoric.

Previous reports by CCTV News also quoted Ghalibaf as saying that the US knows "no one will believe their nonsense," and that the US is economically incapable of further restricting other countries' relations with Iran.

In other words, while the US attempts to force Iran's trade partners to "pick sides" through secondary sanctions, Iran is trying to send another signal: the deterrent power of US sanctions is declining, and Iran's trade partners will not fully adjust their relations with Iran according to US demands.
