# Tesla's ten-year "solar roof tile dream" officially ends: production halted due to unsustainable finances, energy strategy fully shifts to traditional photovoltaics and energy storage

According to Zhitong Finance APP, after nearly a decade of commercialization attempts, Tesla's (TSLA.US) iconic Solar Roof project has officially announced its termination this week. According to media reports citing sources, Tesla has officially stopped the production of Solar Roof products and notified its certified third-party installer network that it will no longer supply solar roof tiles, retaining only the supply and service of traditional solar panels.

On August 20, a series of changes on Tesla's official website officially confirmed the end of the Solar Roof. This decision marks the complete withdrawal of the core narrative built by Elon Musk to facilitate the acquisition of SolarCity in 2016 from the historical stage. The dedicated "Solar Roof" page on Tesla's official website has now been redirected to the traditional solar panel page, and the option has been completely removed from the energy business navigation menu. The navigation menu for the company's energy business has completely removed the "Solar Roof" option, currently retaining only three types of products: solar panels, Powerwall home storage batteries, and Megapack large-scale storage systems. This move officially finalizes the business contraction trend that has lasted for several years.

**Financial Unsustainability: Huge Price Increases and Severely Underestimated Installation Volume**

Tesla's internal assessment believes that the product is financially unsustainable. This stems from the contradiction between its high and uncontrollable costs and the extremely sluggish actual installation volume.

Prices Far Exceed Expectations: Tesla initially claimed that the cost of the solar roof was lower than the combination of "new roof + solar panels," with early quotes around $22 per square foot. However, the actual installation price far exceeded estimates, with significant price increases even after customers signed contracts. In 2021, Tesla significantly raised the price of the solar roof, with some customers experiencing price hikes only after signing contracts; for example, a customer signed for about $72,000, but the price soared to about $146,000 before construction. Some customers reported installation quotes as high as $200,000. This incident led to a class-action lawsuit, and Tesla reached a settlement of $6 million in 2023.

Installation Volume Targets Missed: Musk has repeatedly set targets, planning to achieve 1,000 installations per week by the end of 2019 to the first half of 2020. However, according to energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie, the peak weekly installation volume for this product was only 21 to 32 units, less than 5% of the target. Since its launch in 2016, Tesla's cumulative total installation volume in the U.S. market has been only about 3,000 units.

Design and Cost Dilemmas: The tiles of the solar roof are unique components of the system, requiring Tesla to design and purchase production equipment independently. When sales did not meet expectations, the unit costs rose accordingly. Additionally, its unique tight installation design also caused overheating issues, which could reduce power generation efficiency.

**A Product Born for Acquisition: The End of a Ten-Year Narrative**

The birth of the Solar Roof itself was a "story" serving capital operations. In October 2016, Musk grandly launched the product at a Hollywood location. A few weeks later, Tesla shareholders voted to approve the acquisition of the debt-laden solar installer SolarCity for about $2.6 billion. At that time, Musk was the largest shareholder and chairman of SolarCity, which was operated by his cousin The product demonstration was seen as key to persuading investors to support the deal.

However, subsequent shareholder lawsuits revealed that the tiles showcased at the 2016 launch were not finished products capable of generating power. Nearly ten years later, this product, which once provided justification for the acquisition, has ultimately been officially shelved.

**Strategic Shift: Traditional Solar Panels and Energy Storage Systems Become New Focus**

While ceasing production of the Solar Roof, Tesla has clarified the future direction of its energy business.

Focusing on traditional solar panels: The company's strategy has fully shifted to traditional solar panels, which are produced at its Buffalo, New York factory and began delivery to residential customers this year. The company is promoting standard rooftop solar solutions paired with Powerwall energy storage batteries.

Betting on the "Crystal Sun" project: Tesla has submitted plans this month to Texas to invest $10.1 billion in building a large solar battery factory in the suburbs of Houston. The project is internally codenamed "Project Crystal Sun," with plans to be completed in 2028 and to begin commercial operations in the first quarter of 2029, expected to create 9,712 permanent jobs. Musk has stated that the ultimate production capacity goal for the Texas solar base is 100 gigawatts of solar panels per year.

Energy storage business becomes a growth engine: Tesla's energy storage business has become a key growth point in its energy landscape. By 2025, its energy business revenue is expected to reach $12.77 billion, a year-on-year increase of 27%, with a gross margin close to 30%, significantly higher than its automotive business
