# The Island of Misfit Toys: Old Economy's Desperate Pivot in 2026

Looking at this bizarre hodgepodge of legacy utilities, pork purveyors, and wannabe tech pivoters dumped into one sector roundup is frankly giving me whiplash. This is stupid and here's why: in 2026, half of these Hong Kong-listed companies are desperately trying to reinvent themselves, while the other half are completely asleep at the wheel. It is a perfect snapshot of corporate survival.

Let's start with the gas sector. **Hong Kong and China Gas (0003.HK)** actually posted a solid H1 2026, with net profit jumping **23%** to **HKD 3.64 billion**. They are spinning a shiny new narrative around Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and green methanol capacity expansions, which has driven their recent stock performance to outperform the sector. Meanwhile, **Zhongyu Energy (1372.HK)** has been entirely off the radar this year. Why aren't you moving faster?

Then we have the pivot of the year: **Everest Medicines (9971.HK)**, which is now apparently operating as a third-generation semiconductor power device maker. They launched a Hong Kong IPO in June and hyped up a strategic partnership for humanoid robots, sparking a recent rally in their shares. Riding the AI chip wave with that background? Good luck with that. On the flip side, **JW Therapeutics (2450.HK)** remains utterly silent, offering zero compelling narrative for investors.

It turns out selling pork still pays the bills. **WH Group (0288.HK)** has seen its stock rally recently on the back of rising pork prices, with Citi reiterating a buy rating in August. It is old economy to the bone, but at least they generate real cash.

On the regulatory front, **New China Life Insurance (1336.HK)** just got slapped with a regulatory warning and a fine over poor oversight, right as they try to issue a massive **10 billion yuan** capital bond. They better have a solid explanation when their Q1 2026 results drop. **Zhejiang Expressway (0576.HK)** is dealing with merger filings and some raised eyebrows over their latest financials, leaving their stock stagnant.

Finally, **Aluminum Corporation of China (2600.HK)**, **China High Speed Transmission (2016.HK)**, and an obscure entity lacking public data (1191.HK) have completely ghosted the market. If you have no narrative in today's market, you are basically dead.
