# TSX Stumbles out of Gate

Canada's main stock index opened lower on Tuesday, as investors weighed ongoing trade tensions with the U.S., alongside strong quarterly bank earnings.

The TSX dipped 19.25 points to start Tuesday at 36,694.87

The Canadian dollar slipped 0.03 cents to 72.22 cents U.S.

BMO Financial reported a rise in third-quarter profit on Tuesday, driven by strong performance in its capital markets business.
BMO shares captured $1.03 to $239.66.

Bank of Nova Scotia also posted a rise in third-quarter profit, helped by higher interest income.

BNS shares popped $3.78, or 3.1%, to $124.07.

The results add to a broader rally in bank stocks, which have outperformed the TSX this year. The financial sector hit its highest level in eight years earlier this month.

Focus is also on U.S.-Canada trade tensions after President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to raise U.S. tariffs on all cars, trucks and automotive parts from Canada to 50% starting January 1, 2027 — escalating a trade fight after negotiations collapsed last week.

The deal on the table would have cut the top-line tariff rate on Canadian cars and light-duty trucks to 15% from 25% and the tariffs on aluminum and steel to 25% from 50%.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange jumped 2.36 points to 996.29.

Seven of the 12 TSX subgroups hesitated, weighed most by energy, down 1.5%, while gold and materials each lost 0.5%.

The five gainers were led by information technology, leaping 1.5%, health-care, up 0.5%, and financials, nosing up 0.1%.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. equities rose on Tuesday as Treasury yields fell for another day. Chip stocks also moved higher, with investors looking ahead to Nvidia’s earnings.

The Dow Jones Industrials added 18.7 points to open at 53,435.86.

The S&P 500 recovered 28.53 points to 7,681.39.

The NASDAQ Composite leaped 225.7 points to 26,205.89.

Investors were also moving into chip stocks as they geared up for Nvidia earnings on Wednesday after the bell. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices and Micron Technology added 3% each, while Intel advanced more than 2%. Nvidia was up more than 1%

Prices for the 10-year Treasury strengthened, lowering yields to 4.66% from Monday’s 4.70%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices skidded $2.67 to $82.34 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices slid $23.60 to $4,674.20 U.S. an ounce.
