The deal fell apart due to the board viewing the price as too low, alongside financing and regulatory concerns. # PayPal Stock Has Lost Its Buyout Boost. What Happens Now?

PayPal Holdings (PYPL) is losing a key takeover catalyst after fintech giant Stripe and private equity firm Advent International ended their pursuit of the payments company. The buyer group had offered $60.50 per share, valuing PayPal at more than $53 billion.

PayPal stock had already gained more than 40% this quarter as investors weighed the takeover possibility and the company reported stronger-than-expected earnings. Shares closed at $61.47 on Thursday, slightly above the $60.50-per-share offer.

The deal now appears to be off the table, leaving investors to focus on PayPal's business and its turnaround.

## **Why Did the PayPal Deal Fall Apart?**

The latest development follows weeks of discussions about a possible higher offer. PayPal's board had viewed the $60.50-per-share proposal as too low. The talks also faced financing and regulatory concerns.

Block (XYZ) was part of the earlier discussions with Stripe and Advent in April. However, it left the group before the formal offer was made.

## **PayPal's Business Still Has Momentum**

PayPal reported $1.38 in adjusted EPS on $8.68 billion in revenue in the second quarter. Total payment volume increased 10% year over year to $486.4 billion. The company also raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to about $5.38. Those results now give investors a reason to focus on the company's business rather than the takeover talks.

However, competition remains a challenge. PayPal is up against Apple (AAPL) and Alphabet (GOOGL), whose payment services continue to compete for consumers.

Now investors will be watching whether PayPal can keep growing and improving its business on its own.

## **Is PayPal a Buy, Sell or Hold?**

According to TipRanks data, PayPal carries a Hold consensus rating from 28 analysts. Of them, 4 rate the stock a Buy, 22 recommend a Hold, and 2 assign a Sell. The stock has an average price target of $59.30, implying a roughly 3.52% downside. (See **PYPL stock forecast**)
