description: "Walmart's potential return to a $1 trillion valuation hinges on its high-margin digital businesses—advertising, memberships, and marketplace sales—which are growing significantly faster than traditional retail. Despite recent stock declines due to disappointing earnings, these segments now contribute roughly one-third of operating profits. The company's premium valuation reflects investor expectations that Walmart will successfully transition into a higher-margin digital platform."

# Walmart's $1 Trillion Comeback May Depend on One Business

Walmart Inc. (WMT, Financials) may have grown more profitably without selling additional groceries and household items.

Walmart's advertising, membership, and marketplace businesses are growing faster than its retail operations, giving it a chance to reach $1 trillion.

Walmart shares fell dramatically from May highs after two disappointing earnings releases. Before losing 20% of its value, the stock was worth $1.06 trillion. Under the sales statistics may lay the more interesting narrative.

Global e-commerce revenue jumped 23%, U.S. 24%, marketplace sales 52%, and membership fee revenue 17% in the latest quarter.

Advertising revenue rose 38%, including 43% at Walmart Connect. Digital advertising has larger margins than retail, making that business crucial.

Reporters estimate that advertising and membership fees provide around one-third of Walmart's operating profits while being a modest part of its $700 billion revenue.

Walmart trades at 36 times forward earnings, making inadequate execution unlikely. Its valuation is increasingly based on more than store sales.

Walmart may become a higher-margin digital platform if advertising, memberships, and marketplace sales continue to dominate additional earnings. That could determine whether the corporation can regain its trillion-dollar worth.
