# Walmart Shares Rise After $Billion-Scale Opioid Lawsuit Settlement

Walmart shares rose 1% after the retailer resolved a federal lawsuit concerning opioid dispensing practices at its pharmacies, according to a Thursday Justice Department statement.

The case, filed in 2020, alleged that Walmart pharmacies failed to properly respond to warning signs involving prescriptions for opioids and other controlled substances. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, although the retailer had faced the possibility of billions of dollars in penalties.

The settlement closes a long-running legal matter for Walmart. The retailer previously agreed in 2022 to pay $3.1 billion to settle claims brought by state and local governments tied to allegations surrounding its role in the opioid crisis.

The Justice Department said the agreement addresses allegations involving Walmart's responsibilities under the Controlled Substances Act when dispensing regulated drugs.

The resolution removes uncertainty tied to the federal case, while the undisclosed settlement amount leaves investors without a clear measure of the financial impact.

Closing the lawsuit may reduce a legal overhang for Walmart, though the settlement's undisclosed cost limits visibility into its earnings impact.
