# Walmart Ends a Federal Opioid Fight Without Naming the Price

Walmart , the retail, advertising and e-commerce giant, settled the federal government's opioid lawsuit Friday as its stock stood at $103.08. The legal cloud is gone. The price tag is not. Neither Walmart nor the Justice Department disclosed the settlement amount, leaving investors unable to calculate the financial hit.

The government sued Walmart in 2020 over alleged Controlled Substances Act violations dating back to 2013. A judge threw out several claims but kept allegations involving knowingly invalid prescriptions alive. Walmart had already agreed to pay $3.1 billion in 2022 to settle separate opioid claims brought by state and local governments.

That $3.1 billion payment equaled roughly 56% of Walmart's latest quarterly free cash flow of $5.5 billion. The comparison does not forecast the new bill, but it shows why the missing figure matters. At $103.08, the stock trades just 0.14% above its $102.94 GF Value, putting valuation on a knife edge: the courtroom risk is finished, but investors still need the final cost.
