# Why Is Intel Stock Rising in Premarket Today, 8/31/26?

Intel (INTC) stock rose 1.5% in premarket trading on Monday after reports that South Korean memory-chip giant SK Hynix (SKHY) is considering Intel Foundry as a supplier for the base dies used in its next-generation HBM4E memory. The potential deal could provide a meaningful boost to Intel's contract manufacturing business.

A base die is the logic chip at the bottom of an HBM stack. It manages communication between the memory chips and processors such as GPUs.

According to the *Herald Economy*, SK Hynix is evaluating whether to outsource part of its HBM4E base-die production to Intel, potentially reducing its reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM). TSMC currently produces the base dies for SK Hynix's HBM4 products using a 12nm-class process.

## **How Could SK Hynix's Move Benefit Intel?**

As HBM technology advances, base dies are becoming more complex and expensive to manufacture. Industry sources cited in the report said TSMC-produced HBM4 base dies can cost roughly three to four times more than the core dies SK Hynix makes internally. A core die is the memory chip in an HBM stack that stores data.

For Intel, winning part of this business would provide an important customer for Intel Foundry as the company works to expand its external foundry operations. It could also strengthen Intel's position in the growing AI semiconductor supply chain.

However, investors should view the report cautiously, as neither company has confirmed a deal. SK Hynix said on August 31 that it could not confirm details of its technology roadmap and that some information in the reports was inconsistent with the facts.

SK Hynix has already shipped samples of its 12-layer HBM4E, with the product offering data speeds of up to 16Gbps per pin and improved power efficiency. If Intel ultimately secures the base-die business, it could mark an important step forward for Intel Foundry and provide another potential catalyst for INTC stock.

For TSMC, SK Hynix shifting some base-die production to Intel would likely have a limited near-term revenue impact but could eventually weaken its position in the HBM base-die supply chain.

## **Is INTC Stock a Good Buy Right Now?**

On TipRanks, INTC has a Hold consensus rating based on five Buys, 24 Holds, and two Sell ratings. The average Intel price target of $116.84 implies 30.6% upside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, INTC shares have surged 142.5%.
