Caterpillar Is Turning Its Mining Automation Experience Into an AI Growth Strategy

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Heavy-equipment giant Caterpillar (CAT) is expanding its use of AI after decades of experience with autonomous mining equipment. According to TechCrunch, the company now wants to bring those lessons into construction sites and other more complex work environments. At the same time, Caterpillar plans to spend $100 million over five years to train its 118,000 employees in AI, as well as robotics and autonomous technology. The push comes as AI infrastructure is already helping the financial results, with Q2 revenue reaching a record $20.5 billion and power-generation sales jumping 72% to $3.10 billion.

Interestingly, Caterpillar first began focusing on automation in its mining operations, where worker shortages and dangerous conditions make autonomous equipment especially useful. Today, the company offers automated haul trucks and drilling equipment. It also sells remote-controlled machines and software that helps customers manage fleets.

Now, Caterpillar wants to apply that experience to environments such as construction sites and quarries, where conditions can change more often. The company is also bringing AI directly to workers. Its Cat AI Assistant allows technicians next to a machine to use voice commands to find repair instructions. The system can also help diagnose problems and identify parts before repairs start.

That tool benefits from a huge amount of Caterpillar data. CTO Jaime Mineart said that the company has about 1.6 million connected assets worldwide and more than 16 petabytes of structured data.

Caterpillar Is Bringing AI Into More of Its Business

Caterpillar is also using AI inside its own operations. The technology can help create digital versions of manufacturing sites so the company can study how operations are working.

Its software teams are using AI agents as well. These tools can update older software code and create new code. Moreover, they can help find problems earlier in the development process.

Meanwhile, AI is already helping Caterpillar since it also sells the equipment needed to power the AI infrastructure boom. Indeed, demand for equipment that powers data centers helped push quarterly revenue to an all-time high, and CEO Joe Creed said that the demand for cloud computing and generative AI infrastructure remains strong.

Is CAT a Buy, Sell, or Hold?
