# Iraq to boost Akkas field output by 10 fold

Iraq has awarded a contract to the US oil giant ConocoPhilips to expand one of its largest gas fields by nearly 10 times over the next few years.

Iraq last year awarded phase one of the Akkas field development to Texas-based oilfield services company SLB.

OPEC’s second largest oil exporter signed mega deals during a visit to the US last month by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, including contracts with ConocoPhilips, HKN, Chevron and other oil majors for the development of its hydrocarbon sector.

Most of those companies confirmed the deals which also cover Iraq’s giant oilfields and the development of its oil and gas infrastructure.

“We have drawn up a plan to expand production of Akkas gas field to 400 million cubic feet per day (mcfd) in 2030 from 43 mcfd at present,” said Mohammed Hassan, director general of the state-owned Midland Oil Company.

“We have scheduled meetings with a delegation from ConocoPhilips in Baghdad shortly to discuss implementation of the agreement signed between the oil ministry and the company in the US,” he told the Iraqi News Agency last week.

Hassan said SLB, which was awarded a contract for phase one of Akkas field development, is drilling six gas wells and building a gas processing plant near the field in the Western Al-Anbar governorate, Iraq’s largest province.

“We have agreed with SLB to build a plant with a capacity to handle 100 mcfd of gas…the plan to increase production to 100 million is expected to be completed by mid-2027 while reaching 400 million can be achieved in 2030,” he said.
