Ford recently offered up sales projections on the Fathom electric pickup, and it plans to sell 100,000 of these in the first year. Ford investors were impressed, if guarded, and gave Ford shares a modest boost in Friday afternoon's trading. Ford has also seen a 22.74% rally in its share price over the past year. ## **Great Expectations, Ford Edition** If Ford can actually achieve this number, Ford would be the first electric vehicle maker that is not Tesla (TSLA) to clear the six-figure sales mark in one year for a single model. While General Motors (GM) managed to sell around 170,000 electric vehicles last year, that was spread out over all of GM's electric inventory. The Fathom is designed to bring in drivers who are still driving gas or hybrid models, and will include a large touch screen as well as the BlueCruise hands-free driver-assist system, complete with Apple (AAPL) Maps integration. The Fathom will be selling in a tough market, though, as electric vehicles in the United States are on the decline since the government incentives were lost. ## **…Please Don't Ask About Towing** One problem for the Fathom, however, may come from its towing rating. Rather, it may come from the fact that Ford has not yet published such a rating. This is going to prove a problem for Ford's projection that those who are still driving gas or hybrid vehicles will make a jump to a pure electric. One of the key points in that projection is that the Fathom can do everything that those gas and hybrid vehicles can. If it cannot tow a trailer, or handle a similar load, then it is useless as a work truck in some scenarios. And that makes the ability to pivot to the Fathom that much less likely for those buyers, limiting the earlier projections accordingly. ## **Is Ford Stock a Good Buy Right Now?** Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on F stock based on seven Buys, six Holds and one Sell assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below.
