ZAWYA: Toyota Tsusho plans to assemble new Toyota vehicle series in Egypt

Arab Finance: Japanese trading company Toyota Tsusho Corporation plans to assemble a new series of Toyota vehicles in Egypt in the coming period, President and CEO Toshimitsu Imai said during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, as per a statement.

Madbouly met with Imai at the government headquarters in the New Capital on September 7 to review the company’s operations and potential investments in Egypt’s automotive and clean and renewable energy sectors.

Madbouly said the automotive and clean and renewable energy sectors are among the government’s priorities and hold particular importance in the Egyptian market. He added that the government wants Toyota Tsusho to expand its presence and investments in the country.

The prime minister also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Egypt and Japan, noting that the talks marked his second meeting with a Toyota delegation and reflected both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation.

Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem said the Egyptian market is developing and offers growing opportunities, adding that the government was interested in Toyota Tsusho’s assessment of the market and its plans to capitalize on those prospects.

Egypt aims to become a center for vehicle assembly and manufacturing by providing a range of incentives, according to the minister. He also underscored the government’s efforts to increase local production and draw on Toyota Motor Corporation’s technical training experience.

The minister added that Egypt’s free trade agreements, strategic location, and infrastructure provide access to export markets.

For his part, Iwai expressed appreciation for the meeting and said the Egyptian market presented opportunities that Japanese companies were seeking to capitalize on. He also highlighted the strength of Egyptian-Japanese relations.

Imai praised the Egyptian government’s efforts to maintain stability and cited the country’s economic performance amid regional turbulence. He then outlined Toyota Tsusho’s presence in Egypt, which spans the automotive, green infrastructure, energy, logistics, and food-export sectors.

In the automotive market, the group operates through the Toyota and Lexus brands via Toyota Egypt, with vehicle sales reaching around 9,600 units in 2025, according to Imai.

Toyota Fortuner vehicles have been assembled in Egypt since 2012, when Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Tsusho began local production through Toyota Motor Engineering Egypt, with the Arab American Vehicles Company serving as the assembly contractor.

Alongside the existing operation, Imai said the company intends to assemble a new series of Toyota vehicles in Egypt in the near future. No model, investment value, production capacity, or launch date was disclosed.

Toyota Tsusho’s activities in Egypt also include thermal power plant projects with a combined capacity of 6,262 megawatts and investments of about $2.4 billion, Imai said. He also pointed to the group’s wind energy projects and said its renewable energy investment plan was progressing as scheduled.

In transportation and logistics, Toyota Tsusho participates in the international consortium behind the Suez Canal Automotive Terminal (SCAT) at East Port Said. The terminal, Egypt’s first facility dedicated to roll-on/roll-off vehicle vessels, began operations in July 2025 and has a planned annual capacity of up to 500,000 vehicles.

The group’s operations further extend to supporting exports of Egyptian food products to Japan, reflecting the range of its activities in the country.

Imai said Toyota Tsusho’s automotive strategy was also moving forward as planned. He affirmed the company’s support for Egypt’s efforts to raise local content and expand domestic manufacturing, while emphasizing the importance of technical training in the labor-intensive automotive industry.

Concluding the meeting, Madbouly reiterated the government’s support for Toyota Tsusho’s operations and investments in Egypt. He also pointed to Japan’s participation in several major development projects in the country and the elevation of Egyptian-Japanese relations to a strategic partnership in 2023.
