Ford Stock (NYSE:F) Sinks as Trump Administration Declares "Profound Concern"

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Ford stock fell over 2% after the Trump administration expressed 'profound concern' regarding its ties to China, specifically citing supply chain exposure and a battery licensing agreement with CATL. Ford disputed these claims as factually erroneous. Despite this political friction, analysts maintain a Moderate Buy consensus on Ford shares, with an average price target of $15.88 implying 16.29% upside potential.

Legacy automaker Ford (F) has been the beneficiary of Trump administration policies for some time now, but there are signs that may be turning around. The Trump administration recently noted it had "profound concern" over the connections between Ford and China, even as Ford declared it was very thoroughly on Trump's side. The dichotomy did not sit well with Ford investors, and Ford stock lost over 2% in Wednesday afternoon's trading. Ford has also seen a 22.59% rally in its share price over the past year.

Whose Side Are You On, Anyway?

The concern in question emerged from Sean Duffy, Secretary of Transportation, who noted that Ford seemed to have a lot of trajectory in common with China. Duffy specifically called out "…American national automotive manufacturing integrity, supply chain exposure, and reliance on technologies of foreign adversaries."

Ford did not take this lightly, declaring that Duffy's letter contained numerous "factual errors," and also called it a "…wrongheaded attempt to capture headlines," noted a report from CNBC. But Ford does have a licensing agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., or CATL (CTATF), over lithium iron phosphate battery production. That deal goes back to 2023, though today, it serves as a bit of a lightning rod to call negative attention to Ford.

Safety and Motorsports

While Ford's motorsports presence is pretty substantial, it turns out that Ford also has a presence in motorsports not immediately connected to racing. Ford is actually a part of the International Motor Sports Association's (IMSA) American Medical Response (AMR) safety team. Ford's F-150 Raptor serves as a Rapid Response vehicle in that vein, valued for its "…unique, agile capability to navigate North America's busiest race paddocks with speed and care," noted Senior Manager of IMSA Track Services Roy Spielmann.

Is Ford Stock a Good Buy Right Now?

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on F stock based on seven Buys, six Holds and one Sell assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. The average F price target of $15.88 per share implies 16.29% upside potential.
