# Anthropic predicts three scenarios for the AI economy in 2030, with knowledge workers potentially facing a "tsunami of unemployment" in extreme situations

Anthropic's economic team recently released an AI scenario analysis for the U.S. economy, categorizing potential developments before 2030 into three paths: "moderate," "significantly accelerated," and "extreme." The report indicates that regardless of the speed of AI adoption, overall economic output is likely to increase, but the impacts on employment, wages, and income distribution vary greatly, particularly with knowledge workers facing the most pressure.

In the more moderate scenario, the impact of AI on the economy is roughly comparable to the changes brought about by the internet, with GDP in 2030 only 1.6% higher than the baseline path without AI, and an unemployment rate of about 3.9%, still close to historical norms. The wage changes for knowledge workers are also relatively limited, with only slight adjustments in the overall labor market.

If we enter the "significantly accelerated" scenario, Anthropic assumes that by 2030, AI could handle about half of knowledge work, with economic growth rates approximately double the usual pace. The U.S. GDP could reach $36.3 trillion by 2030, 8.3% higher than the baseline. However, wages for knowledge workers would remain largely flat, and employment in certain occupations would noticeably shift to other fields, raising the overall unemployment rate to 4.6%.

The most concerning scenario is the "extreme" one. Anthropic estimates that if AI is more efficient than humans in most knowledge work tasks and is nearly fully automated, the GDP in 2030 could reach $44.4 trillion, 32.4% higher than the baseline, with an annual growth rate of 15.4%, equivalent to the economy doubling every 4.5 years. However, the cost would be a potential 21.5% decline in knowledge worker employment compared to mid-2026, with the related unemployment rate rising to 17.9%, and the overall unemployment rate climbing to 11.9%.

The report also points out that there will be significant differentiation in wages and income distribution. In extreme scenarios, the wages of knowledge workers could be 11.5% lower than paths without AI, while wages in other occupations may rise by 33.6%. The share of labor income is expected to decrease from about 60% to 45.2%, while the share of capital income will rise to 54.8%. Anthropic also mentioned that to maintain knowledge workers' income at levels without AI, a large-scale transfer equivalent to about 9% of GDP may be necessary, but such a scale of policy intervention has no precedent in the history of technological change.
