# QUICK SPARK: Trump Announces $500 'Obamacare' Rebates for Nearly 1 Million Americans

President **Donald Trump** on Thursday announced $500 rebate checks for roughly one million Americans who were overcharged under Obamacare, coming just one day after he pledged $5,000 midterm “dividends” if Republicans control Congress.

The claims were shared in an X post by The White House.

## Budget and Legal Hurdles, Plus a History of Unfulfilled Pledges

In a Thursday note, Trump said this payout, estimated to cost over $1 trillion, would be funded by the economic success under his leadership. However, the proposal raises questions about its impact on the federal budget, which is already running a deficit nearing $1.8 trillion.

Legal challenges could also arise, as offering payments to influence voting behavior is a criminal offense. 

Trump has previously made similar unfulfilled promises, such as a $5,000 "**Dogecoin** (CRYPTO: DOGE) dividend" and a $2,000 "tariff rebate" that never materialized. 

**Trump Media** **& Technology Group Corp.** (NASDAQ:DJT) has seen its stock show upward momentum amid these announcements.

## Ripple Co-Founder’s EV Proposal

In related discussions on economic relief, **Ripple Labs** co-founder **Chris Larsen** suggested that California should allow the sale of low-cost Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) to help low-income drivers amid high gas prices. 

In a Wednesday podcast appearance, Larsen advocated introducing affordable models like the $10,000 BYD Seagull, arguing that such measures could ease financial pressure on consumers affected by California’s high gas taxes.

The proposal comes as tensions rise between **Ford Motor Company** (NYSE:F) and the Trump administration over the automaker’s ties with Chinese companies. Ford has pushed back against what it called a "wrongheaded attempt” to reduce these partnerships.
