# Rivian (RIVN) Is Nearing Profitable Scale. I'm Still on the Fence

Rivian Automotive (RIVN) finally has scale in sight, but the Irvine, California-based electric vehicle (EV) maker still needs to prove that this scale is worth it for shareholders. The ramp-up of its R2 model — a smaller EV starting at $57,990 and designed for much higher volumes — has begun. Production should accelerate in the second half, while automotive margins have improved significantly over the past year.

At the same time, Q3 should still carry heavy launch costs. The market is looking to Q4 for breakeven and better fixed-cost leverage.

The problem is that this transition remains expensive. Rivian continues to burn a lot of cash and has heavily diluted shareholders in recent years. Its share price trajectory reflects that quite clearly.
