UnitedHealth CFO Says ‘We Didn’t Need the Dollars’ As TPG Joins Optum Overhaul

UnitedHealth Group sold a stake in its Florida-based Optum Health operations to private equity firm TPG. CFO Wayne DeVeydt stated the deal was for strategic focus rather than capital, aiming to improve profitability after recent margin declines. The restructuring targets operating margins of 2% this year, rising to 6% by 2028. This move aligns with broader efforts to recover from weak earnings driven by high healthcare costs and regulatory pressures.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) sold an interest in some Florida-based Optum Health operations to private equity firm TPG Inc. (NASDAQ:TPG) as the health care giant works to improve the unit’s profitability.

The health conglomerate executed this financial transaction to successfully bounce back from last year’s significant profit downturn.

“We didn’t need the dollars; we have the dollars to invest, but we needed the focus and somebody that could actually work with us locally,” UnitedHealth CFO Wayne DeVeydt said in a Bloomberg interview.

Overcoming Profitability Hurdles

The health insurance giant is actively reorganizing its enterprise following unexpectedly weak earnings. Failures within the Optum Health medical clinic division primarily fueled this unexpected financial decline.

Last year, rapidly escalating healthcare costs and restrictive federal payment policies pushed Optum Health’s operating margins firmly into negative territory.

Consequently, the health organization replaced its chief executive officer alongside other key corporate leaders to directly address the weak operational performance.

Margin Recovery And Strategic Restructuring

Bloomberg reported that despite past struggles, executive DeVeydt indicated that Optum Health margins will reach approximately 2% this year. The figure surpasses earlier forecasts because the enterprise is accelerating its operational program rollouts.

Furthermore, DeVeydt projected operating margins to climb to about 4% in 2027 and hit 6% the subsequent year. The affected Florida facilities belong to Optum’s WellMed division, which provides essential healthcare services to senior citizens.

DeVeydt noted that the strategic partnership between Optum WellMed and TPG officially launched within the past year.

Speaking at the Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE:WFC) healthcare investor conference on Wednesday morning, Optum Health CEO Krista Nelson confirmed the TPG transaction aligns perfectly with Optum’s previously disclosed restructuring plan.

She emphasized that the enterprise is currently executing similar strategic investments across several additional healthcare markets. Media reports indicate TPG previously acquired a completely separate subsidiary, Optum U.K., earlier this year.

UnitedHealth confirmed that this earlier strategic divestiture successfully generated $400 million for the UnitedHealth Foundation.

UNH Stock Price Activity: UnitedHealth shares were down 2.74% to $390.54 at the time of publication on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
