# The Week Ahead: Fed Decision and Dot Plot; Trip.com and Lennar Report

US equities slipped last week: the S&P 500 fell 0.80% to 7,656.98, the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.66% to 26,333.03 and the Dow dropped 1.57%, while Singapore's Straits Times Index shed 1.83% to close Friday at 5,695.93. The week's pivot is the Federal Reserve's September meeting, which reporting suggests markets expect to end in a rate increase, set against crude oil above $100 a barrel and a thin US earnings slate.

Earnings calendar — two headliners in a light week

Mon: Kestra Medical Technologies (post), Dave & Buster's (post)
Tue: **Trip.com Group (post)**
Wed: **Lennar (post)**

The US slate is light. Trip.com Group (TCOM.US) reports second-quarter and first-half results after Tuesday's close, with accommodation booking and transport ticketing the segments to watch; its US shares closed Friday at $39.02. Lennar (LEN.US) follows after Wednesday's close with fiscal third-quarter numbers; earlier guidance pointed to 21,000–22,000 new orders and a home-sales gross margin near 16%, leaving mortgage rates and sales incentives the swing factors for US new-home demand. Monday's post-close reporters are Kestra Medical Technologies, on its wearable defibrillator business, and Dave & Buster's, on US discretionary spending. No SGX-listed results of note are scheduled this week, leaving local trading to macro and flows.

Economic calendar — FOMC, US retail sales and China data

The Fed meets Tuesday and Wednesday and publishes its statement and updated economic projections at 2pm ET on Wednesday, with the dot plot the main event; an upward shift in the median rate path from June would lift Treasury yields and the dollar and pressure high-valuation technology shares. Wednesday's data run begins with August retail sales and import-export prices at 8:30am ET, about five and a half hours before the Fed. Thursday brings housing starts, building permits and the September Philadelphia Fed index; Friday, August industrial production and capacity utilisation, plus a speech from Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman on bank stress testing. The New York Fed's September Empire State manufacturing index is expected at 14.75 against 20.6 previously. Asia's slate is fuller: China publishes August house prices, retail sales (consensus +0.8% year on year, from 0.6%) and industrial production (4.8%, from 4.5%) on Tuesday, while Japan's August trade balance is due Wednesday and expected to stay in deficit, and euro-zone July industrial production is seen falling 0.4% on the month.

US: what to watch

The AI complex is the other axis. Nvidia closed Friday at $218.29 after a fifth consecutive daily decline, and Reuters reported the company is weighing an investment of up to $10bn in an Anthropic listing that could raise up to $100bn at a valuation near $2trn — a reminder of how much of the tape's risk sits in a handful of names. Oracle's and Adobe's beats last week showed enterprise software demand still holding, while Apple closed at $332.27 after launching the iPhone 18 Pro and its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, with John Ternus now chief executive after Tim Cook's 15-year tenure.

Singapore: what to watch

The STI closed Friday at 5,695.93, down 1.83% on the week and about 106 points below the previous Friday's 5,801.96. The banks were steady into the weekend, with DBS at S$77.00, OCBC at S$31.60 and UOB at S$41.26, while SGX gave up roughly 1.5% on Friday to S$24.30. Higher US rates have traditionally been read as supportive for local bank net interest margins, though the same signal raises funding costs and weighs on the yield-sensitive S-REIT and utilities complex. No MAS policy event and no top-tier local data appear on this week's calendar, so the STI's direction will hinge on the Fed outcome and any spillover from the AI trade into Singapore's technology-linked counters.

Risks to watch

Oil is the wildcard: crude above $100 on Middle East tension keeps inflation pressure on and complicates the Fed's path. A firm retail sales print would reinforce hike expectations, while a soft one would shift the worry to growth. A further slide in AI leaders would spill into Asian technology names, and the Senate's procedural vote on the CLARITY Act could move crypto-linked assets.
