AI Boom Is ‘Dot-Com and Subprime All Merged in One,’ Former Fidelity Manager Tells Steve Eisman

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Former Fidelity manager George Noble warns that the AI boom resembles a merger of the dot-com and subprime crises, cautioning that massive spending may fail to generate adequate returns. He argues capital deployment could outrun investor returns, potentially leading to funding drying up. This warning coincides with AMD surpassing $1 trillion in market value and Nvidia's strong demand. Investor Steve Eisman highlighted concerns over circular financing and customer concentration at Nvidia.

Former Fidelity fund manager George Noble says the artificial intelligence boom looks like "dot-com and subprime all merged in one," warning that massive spending on AI may fail to generate adequate returns.

"Show me the ROI," Noble told "Big Short" investor Steve Eisman on The Real Eisman Playbook. Noble said funding could eventually dry up if returns fail to justify the amount of capital being deployed.

The warning comes as AI stocks rally again. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) crossed $1 trillion in market value for the first time Monday, while a semiconductor-led rally pushed the Nasdaq 100 to a three-month high.

AI Can Win While Investors Lose

Noble pointed to the dot-com era, when bullish forecasts for internet adoption proved broadly correct even as companies building the infrastructure collapsed.

Internet traffic subsequently exploded, he said, but that "didn’t stop Global Crossing and all the rest of them from going bankrupt."

"The point is AI is set up to fail," Noble said, arguing that the capital being deployed may ultimately outrun the returns available to investors.

The financing burden is also growing. Goldman Sachs expects hyperscaler debt issuance to reach a record $420 billion in 2027, up 60% from 2026 estimates, Reuters reported.

Eisman Flags Nvidia Customer Concentration

Eisman said circular financing in AI "kind of drives me crazy," though he added it would matter far less if OpenAI and Anthropic became highly profitable.

Eisman also pointed to Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA), noting that five direct customers accounted for about 70% of the chipmaker’s accounts receivable at the end of its latest quarter.

Eisman called the figure "very frightening."

Noble estimated roughly 70% of hyperscaler AI revenue comes from OpenAI and Anthropic, warning that trouble at OpenAI could reverberate through the ecosystem.

"Totally agree," Eisman replied.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has offered evidence that AI-related cloud demand extends beyond OpenAI and Anthropic.

The company said nearly 90% of Microsoft Cloud revenue in fiscal 2026 came from customers outside frontier-model companies, while its contracted commercial revenue backlog excluding OpenAI still grew 25%.

Prediction Market Sees a Bust as Unlikely

Prediction traders are not yet pricing Noble’s scenario as imminent.

A Polymarket contract with nearly $3 million traded puts the chance of an AI-industry downturn by Dec. 31 at about 11%. However, the growing financing web linking AI suppliers, customers and investors has raised questions about how much of the boom depends on capital continuing to flow.

That gets to the heart of Noble’s argument: being right about the technology does not necessarily mean investors are paying the right price to build it.
