# Has Competition Killed Tesla (TSLA) in China?

Tesla (TSLA) has not been killed by competition in China, despite what some headlines suggest. Tesla's sales in China fell 9% year-over-year in the first half of 2026. However, the broader Chinese car market is down 20.2% year-over-year in the same period, according to *CNBC*. That means Tesla is losing sales, but it is holding up better than the overall market.

Tesla's margins remain far stronger than those of the broader Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) estimates gross margins for the broader Chinese EV market to be 1.5%, compared with Tesla's 16.88% global gross margin. That gives Tesla more room to withstand intense price competition that is squeezing weaker EV makers.

China's EV market is also heading toward consolidation after years of aggressive expansion. With 129 EV brands competing for customers and hundreds of new models launching this year, many companies may struggle to survive a weaker market. Tesla's brand, scale, and growing services business could give it an advantage as that shakeout unfolds. I remain bullish on TSLA, although geopolitics remains a key risk.
