This concentration, unmatched since the railroad era, means AI drives two-thirds of the index's annual gains. While rewarding during growth periods, this heavy reliance on a narrow group poses significant risk; any disappointment in AI earnings or valuations could disproportionately impact the broader market, challenging the notion that index funds offer balanced exposure." datetime: "2026-10-09T17:20:57.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/301426608.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/301426608.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/301426608.md) generator: "portal-rs" --- # JPMorgan Spots Stunning Shift in S&P 500 Artificial intelligence has become so dominant in U.S. equities that a JPMorgan basket of just **41 AI-linked companies now represents 49% of the S&P 500's market value**, underscoring how heavily the broader market increasingly depends on a single investment theme. The concentration is historically unusual. JPMorgan noted that one industry has not commanded a comparable share of the U.S. stock market since **railroads dominated equities in the nineteenth century**. The same AI basket has also generated roughly **two-thirds of the S&P 500's increase in market capitalization this year**. Nvidia is the basket's largest component at **8.21% of the S&P 500**, followed by Apple at 7.05%, Alphabet at 6.13%, Microsoft at 5.65% and Amazon at 4.02%. But this isn't simply another Magnificent Seven statistic. JPMorgan's basket stretches across the AI supply chain, including Broadcom (AVGO), Micron , Advanced Micro Devices , Oracle , Palantir , Arista Networks , Eaton , Constellation Energy and data-center power beneficiaries such as Vistra . That breadth helps explain why AI has increasingly become a market-level factor rather than merely a technology-sector trade. The concentration is showing up elsewhere. The **10 largest S&P 500 companies now account for roughly 40% of the index**, while Reuters noted this week that AI and technology exposure has pushed broader market concentration beyond levels seen during the dot-com era. **Investor Takeaway** For investors holding S&P 500 funds such as SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) or iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), this matters because owning the index no longer necessarily means having balanced exposure across competing economic themes. Nearly half of every market-cap-weighted dollar is now indirectly tied to JPMorgan's AI complex. That concentration has been extremely rewarding while AI earnings and spending have accelerated. Technology companies are expected to account for roughly **two-thirds of S&P 500 earnings growth in the third quarter**, according to current estimates. But concentration works both ways. If AI earnings, capital spending or valuations disappoint, weakness across a relatively small group of companies could have an unusually large effect on the entire index. For investors, the number to watch is therefore no longer simply Nvidia's growth rate. It is whether earnings growth across the rest of the S&P 500 begins catching up with the companies currently carrying nearly half the market. ### Related Stocks - [AMD.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/AMD.US.md) - [ANET.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ANET.US.md) - [CEG.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/CEG.US.md) - [ETN.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ETN.US.md) - [MU.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/MU.US.md) - [NVDA.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/NVDA.US.md) - [ORCL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ORCL.US.md) - [PLTR.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/PLTR.US.md) - [VST.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VST.US.md) - [IVV.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/IVV.US.md) - [SDS.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SDS.US.md) - [SH.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SH.US.md) - [SPDN.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPDN.US.md) - [SPLG.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPLG.US.md) - [SPUU.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPUU.US.md) - [SPXL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPXL.US.md) - [SPXS.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPXS.US.md) - [SPXU.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPXU.US.md) - [SPY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPY.US.md) - [SSO.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SSO.US.md) - [UPRO.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/UPRO.US.md) - [VOO.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VOO.US.md) - [.SPX.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/.SPX.US.md) - [SPYU.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPYU.US.md) - [SPYQ.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPYQ.US.md) - [SPYB.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPYB.US.md) - [SPYM.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPYM.US.md) ## Related News & Research - [Alphabet or Nvidia: One AI Stock Is a Compelling Buy, the Other's Issues Can't Be Ignored, Says Top Investor](https://longbridge.com/en/news/301288706.md) - [Samsung’s $80B Quarterly Profit Tops Nvidia, AMD’s Lisa Su Shops In Seoul](https://longbridge.com/en/news/301279334.md) - [I've owned the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF for 6 years.
