Sales in China fell to 64,837 vehicles from 71,525 a year earlier, while exports climbed to 30,529 from 19,287, according to China Passenger Car Association figures released Friday. Together, those figures pushed Shanghai’s total wholesale sales up 5% to 95,366 vehicles. Unlike Chinese retail sales, the wholesale figure includes both cars sold locally and those shipped overseas. ### Exports Account for Nearly Half of Shanghai’s 2026 Sales So Far The September figures reflect a much bigger shift in Tesla’s business. During the first nine months of 2026, Shanghai exports more than doubled to 361,972 vehicles, while sales within China declined nearly 12% to 381,088. Exports accounted for almost 49% of Shanghai’s total sales volume during that period, compared with less than 29% a year earlier. Chinese retail sales have now declined year over year for four consecutive months. ### China’s EV Market Is Also Under Pressure Tesla isn’t alone in facing weaker Chinese demand. Retail sales of new-energy vehicles, including fully electric cars and plug-in hybrids, fell 20% year over year during the first 27 days of September, according to preliminary CPCA data. That decline was steeper than Tesla’s 9% drop for the full month, although the periods differ. The CPCA said a buying rush ahead of subsidy suspensions last September created a difficult comparison. Rival **BYD Co.** (OTC:BYDDY) saw domestic sales fall 13% in September, while overseas sales surged 154%. Its figures also include plug-in hybrids. Tesla has offered Chinese buyers discounts of 5,000 yuan on Model 3 vehicles and 7,000 yuan on selected Model Y variants through October. Meanwhile, Tesla’s European registrations have been recovering, Reuters reported. Tesla delivered 1.32 million vehicles worldwide in the first nine months of 2026, leaving it needing another 475,320 in the fourth quarter to exceed 1.8 million for the year. It delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter. On Kalshi, traders put the probability of exceeding 1.8 million annual deliveries at 73%.
