Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's global head of autonomous mobility & delivery, will leave the company Nov. 16, he wrote in a Tuesday post on LinkedIn. He said he will be taking on a new role outside of the autonomous vehicles industry. His exit comes as Uber competes for its share of a growing robotaxi market. The company has pursued a strategy of signing partnerships with robotaxi providers rather than providing its own self-driving vehicles, setting it apart from Tesla and Waymo, owned by Google parent Alphabet. The company has struck robotaxi partnerships with Wayve, WeRide, Amazon-owned Zoox, and Hyundai Motor-owned Motional, among others. Maredia wrote that Uber has "graduated from the 'zero to one' phase of our AV journey." "Increasingly, our focus will be on scaling AVs in more cities and achieving higher supply density in those markets," he wrote. "Needless to say, I remain confident in Uber's autonomous strategy and the hybrid marketplace we're building (both in Mobility and Delivery), which will continue to be a top priority across the entire executive leadership team." He said Uber's Samarth Kejriwal and Aaron Emrich will run the day-to-day of the company's autonomous vehicle strategy. Uber did not immediately respond to a request to confirm Maredia's exit.
