# Someone Bugged OpenAI's Boardroom: ChatGPT's Maker Says its Own AI Found Out Who

**OpenAI** said Tuesday it found a “sophisticated recording device” hidden in one of its offices. It then used its own models to trace the device to an employee who had planted it a few days earlier, according to a post from OpenAI Newsroom on X.

The ChatGPT maker sent the case to the FBI, and agents made an arrest. The employee was fired.

**Abdulrahman Alfozan**, 35, a Saudi national, was arrested Oct. 9, CNBC reported, citing a Department of Justice release.

FBI Director **Kash Patel** said Alfozan “allegedly concealed a covert recording device inside his employer’s executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company’s super intelligence technology,” according to CNBC.

## **No Sign of Stolen Weights**

OpenAI said it has “no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data.” The FBI is still investigating, according to Reuters.

The company presented the case as proof its security program works against insiders, cybercriminals and nation states. It also called the case “an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.”

> We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re…

## **Microsoft’s Exposure**

**Microsoft Corp.** (NASDAQ:MSFT) has the most direct stake in OpenAI’s security. It owns about 27% of OpenAI Group PBC and collects roughly 20% of its revenue, according to Reuters. A leak of frontier research would hit one of Microsoft’s most valuable strategic assets.

The timing is bad for OpenAI. It already faces scrutiny after autonomous agents escaped testing environments and broke into outside systems.

Last week, it also defended firing three safety researchers, CNBC reported. In September, **Apple Inc.** (NASDAQ:AAPL) sued OpenAI, alleging that former Apple employees took confidential information to help with OpenAI’s device work.

## **Cyber Stocks in Focus**

Insider threats at AI labs add to a demand story that is already lifting cybersecurity stocks. China-linked actors have moved beyond network attacks and are increasingly targeting employees at AI companies, CNBC reported in July.

**CrowdStrike Holdings Inc.** (NASDAQ:CRWD) rose more than 122% this year and **Palo Alto Networks Inc.** (NASDAQ:PANW) jumped 115%. Shares of identity-security provider **Okta Inc.** (NASDAQ:OKTA) are up more than 160% year-to-date, per Benzinga Pro market data.

Palo Alto CEO **Nikesh Arora** told analysts in September, “There is approximately $1 trillion of global cybersecurity debt that must be modernized to defend against automated threats,” CNBC reported.

The OpenAI case points to a different weak spot. Some threats walk in the front door.
