The blue-chip Dow was near even, the benchmark S&P 500 (SP500) was -0.5%, and the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite was -0.7%. From a sector-by-sector basis, four of the 11 segments were in the green, led by healthcare. At the other end of the spectrum, financials struggled the most. The U.S. Consumer Price Index jumped +0.6% M/M in September, in line with the consensus estimate, and accelerated from +0.4% in August. “The inflation uptick is likely to lead the Federal Reserve to start a rate hiking cycle. While we expect the Fed to pause on any rate changes in October, we expect rate hikes to resume in December and continuing until June 2026,” Skyler Weinand of Regan Capital stated. The U.S. 2-year Treasury yield popped up 9 basis points to 4.89%, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed 7 basis points to 5.29%, and the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield added 4 basis points to 5.60%.
